Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qawl sha'ir (قول شاعر): The speech or composition of a poet—implying fabricated, imaginative, or embellished words that are not based on truth.
  • Qaleelan ma tu'minun (قليلا ما تؤمنون): "Little do you believe"—meaning your faith is scarce, weak, and of no benefit.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the divine oath in which Allah swears by all that is seen and unseen, affirming that the Qur'an is the word of Allah, conveyed by a noble Messenger. Here, Allah refutes the false claim of the disbelievers who accused the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) of being a poet, and that the Qur'an was merely poetic composition. Allah declares: "And it is not the word of a poet" — for the Qur'an is not in the style of poetry, nor does it follow the meters and rhythms of poetic speech. It is a revelation that carries truth, guidance, and wisdom, far above the imagination and fabrication of any human mind.

Then Allah says: "Little do you believe" — meaning that their faith is extremely scarce and weak. They may have believed in some trivial matters, but their hearts remain closed to the truth of the Qur'an. Their belief, if any, is so minimal that it brings them no benefit whatsoever. They fail to reflect deeply on the miraculous nature of this Book, which challenges them to produce even a single chapter like it—yet they cannot.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: How can the Qur'an be the word of a poet when it addresses the deepest questions of the human soul, unveils the mysteries of the unseen, and provides a complete system of life that has transformed nations and civilizations? Its eloquence is unmatched, its wisdom is profound, and its guidance is timeless. The disbelievers of Makkah knew poetry intimately—they were masters of it—yet they could not produce anything comparable to even the shortest chapter of the Qur'an.

This verse invites you to open your heart to the truth. Do not let your faith be "little" or scarce. Instead, let it be firm, abundant, and sincere. The Qur'an is not a human invention; it is the direct word of your Creator, sent as a mercy and a guide. Embrace it, reflect upon it, and let it transform your life. For in it lies your success in this world and the Hereafter. Allah is calling you—will you answer?
