Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Hittah" (حِطَّة): A supplication meaning "O Lord, remove our sins" or "absolve us" — a request for the lifting of burdens and forgiveness of transgressions.
- "Sujjadan" (سُجَّدًا): Bowing or prostrating in humility and submission before Allah, signifying complete obedience and reverence.
- "Al-Qaryah" (الْقَرْيَة): The town referred to here is Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), a place of sacred significance.
- "Khatee'at" (خَطِيئَات): Sins, errors, or faults committed by individuals.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, recall and remind your people of the time when Allah addressed the Children of Israel, commanding them with a clear and gracious directive: "Dwell in this blessed town (Jerusalem), and eat from its provisions wherever and whenever you wish — freely and abundantly. But enter its gate with humility, bowing down in submission, and say: 'Hittah' — 'O Lord, forgive us our sins and lighten our burdens.'"
This was a divine test of their obedience and gratitude. Allah promised them that if they fulfilled these conditions — entering with humility and uttering this sincere supplication — He would forgive their sins entirely, absolving them of all accountability for their past misdeeds. Moreover, He added a beautiful promise: "We will increase the reward of those who do good" — meaning that beyond forgiveness, those who excel in righteousness and sincere devotion would receive multiplied blessings in both this world and the Hereafter.
Yet, despite this immense mercy and clear guidance, the Children of Israel — as mentioned in other verses — turned away, replaced the word they were commanded to say with mockery, and entered the gate dragging themselves arrogantly. They lost the opportunity for divine forgiveness and instead incurred Allah's displeasure. This stands as a timeless lesson: when Allah grants a command, the path to His mercy lies in humble compliance, not in distortion or defiance.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a radiant beacon of hope for every believer. It reveals the boundless mercy of Allah — how He, in His infinite kindness, not only forgives sins but promises additional rewards for goodness. The door of repentance is always open; all it takes is a humble heart, a sincere tongue, and a willing spirit. Imagine: the Creator of the heavens and the earth invites you to simply say, "O Lord, forgive me," and He pledges to erase your sins and elevate your rank. This is the beauty of Islam — a religion that transforms a single moment of sincere submission into eternal success. Let us seize this divine invitation, approach our Lord with humility, and strive to be among the "muhsineen" (those who perfect their deeds), for their reward is beyond measure.
