Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ummah (أمة): A group or community of people.
  • Ta'izoon (تعظون): You admonish, advise, or warn.
  • Muhlika (مهلك): Destroyer; one who brings destruction.
  • Mu'adhdhib (معذب): One who inflicts punishment.
  • Ma'dhirah (معذرة): An excuse; a plea of justification.
  • Yattaqoon (يتقون): They fear Allah, become righteous, and guard against sin.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Remember, O Prophet, the remarkable scene when a group of righteous people among the Children of Israel — who had not yet fallen into the sin of breaking the Sabbath — addressed another group of pious admonishers who were actively warning the transgressors. They asked with a tone of apparent futility: "Why do you keep advising a people whom Allah has already decreed to destroy in this world for their persistent disobedience, or to punish with a severe torment in the Hereafter? Your words will not benefit them!"

The admonishers replied with wisdom and sincerity: "We advise them not because we expect worldly results, but to fulfill our duty and present a valid excuse before our Lord. We must enjoin good and forbid evil as He commanded us, so that we are not held accountable for remaining silent while evil spread among us. And perhaps — through our reminders — they may yet come to their senses, fear Allah, and turn back to Him in repentance before it is too late."

This verse beautifully illustrates the spirit of sincere Islamic advocacy. The admonishers did not abandon their mission even when success seemed impossible. They understood that their responsibility was to convey the truth with patience and compassion, leaving the outcome entirely to Allah. Their motivation was twofold: to clear themselves before Allah by fulfilling His command of commanding good and forbidding evil, and to hold onto the hope — however faint — that their words might soften hearts and guide the misguided back to the straight path.

Dear reader, this teaches us a profound lesson: never underestimate the power of a sincere word of truth. Even when people seem lost beyond return, your advice may plant a seed that blossoms later. Your duty is to speak the truth with wisdom and kindness; the guidance itself comes from Allah alone. And what a beautiful excuse to present before your Lord on the Day of Judgment — that you did not remain silent in the face of wrongdoing, but raised your voice for righteousness, hoping for the salvation of souls. Let this inspire you to be among those who call to goodness, never despairing of Allah's mercy, and always holding hope for the transformation of even the most stubborn hearts.

📜 Verse 162-166 — Al-A'raf

But those who wronged among them changed [the words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them. So We sent upon them a punishment from the sky for the wrong that they were doing.
And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.
And when a community among them said, "Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allah is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?" they [the advisors] said, "To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him."
And when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who had forbidden evil and seized those who wronged, with a wretched punishment, because they were defiantly disobeying.
So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised."
