- سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم (We will gradually seize them): To lead someone step by step toward destruction in a way they do not perceive, like climbing stairs one step at a time until they reach the top and fall.

Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals a profound and sobering truth about those who reject Allah’s signs and deny His revelations. When people persistently refuse to believe in the clear proofs of Allah—whether they are the verses of the Qur’an, the miracles of the prophets, or the signs in the universe—Allah does not always punish them immediately. Instead, He may grant them more wealth, health, comfort, and worldly success. On the surface, this appears to be a blessing, but in reality, it is a divine trap.
The word *istidrāj* conveys the idea of gradual, imperceptible leading toward ruin. It is like someone who is given a long rope and left to wander freely, unaware that the rope will eventually tighten around them. Allah grants these people the very things they desire—prosperity, status, and ease—so that they become increasingly arrogant, self-assured, and attached to this world. They begin to think, "We must be on the right path, for look how well we are doing!" This false sense of security hardens their hearts and deepens their delusion, until suddenly, at the moment they least expect it, Allah seizes them with His punishment.
This is not a sign of Allah’s love or approval; rather, it is a form of divine justice and patience. Allah gives them ample time and opportunities to reflect and repent, but when they squander every chance and persist in their denial, the very blessings they enjoyed become the means of their downfall. They are destroyed "from where they do not know"—meaning that the cause of their ruin is something they never anticipated, and their punishment comes upon them suddenly, leaving no room for escape or repentance.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a powerful reminder for every believer to not be deceived by the apparent success of those who reject the truth. Do not envy the wealth, power, or comfort of those who live in defiance of Allah. What may look like a blessing could be a slow-burning punishment. At the same time, it is a call to self-examination: are we ourselves being tested through our blessings? Are we using what Allah has given us to draw closer to Him, or are we becoming complacent and heedless?
The Qur’an is filled with such warnings because Allah, in His infinite mercy, wants to save us from destruction. He does not wish to punish us; He wishes for us to succeed in this life and the next. So let this verse be a wake-up call: never take your blessings for granted, never feel secure from Allah’s plan, and always turn back to Him in gratitude and obedience. For the one who is truly wise is the one who sees the signs of Allah, believes in them, and lives a life of submission—before it is too late.
