Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Qist (الْقِسْطِ): Justice, fairness, and equity—both in belief and in action.
  • Aqimū wujūhakum (وَأَقِيمُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ): Literally "set your faces"—meaning to direct your worship and devotion wholeheartedly, particularly in prayer.
  • Masjid (مَسْجِدٍ): A place of prostration; here it refers to all places of worship where Allah is remembered and prayed to.
  • Mukhliṣīna lahu al-dīn (مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ): Sincerely devoting all acts of worship and obedience to Allah alone, with pure intention and no trace of polytheism or hypocrisy.

The Interpretation:

In this verse, Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare to the polytheists and to all of humanity: "My Lord has commanded justice." This is a profound statement that refutes the false claims of those who invented rituals and practices that Allah never sanctioned. Justice here encompasses both the justice of belief—worshipping Allah alone without partners—and the justice of conduct—treating others fairly, giving everyone their due rights, and avoiding oppression and transgression.

Then the command follows: "Set your faces at every place of worship." This means that wherever you are, and in every prayer you offer, turn your heart and your body sincerely toward Allah. The mosques are the most honored places for this devotion, and the command emphasizes that worship is not restricted to one location but should be established everywhere, with the Kaaba as the direction of prayer. This teaches us that the earth is a place of worship for the believer, and every moment can be an act of devotion when done with the right intention.

The verse continues: "And call upon Him, making the religion sincerely His." This is the essence of Islam—pure monotheism. Your supplication, your prayer, your sacrifice, your life, and your death must all be for Allah alone. No intermediary, no idol, no created being should share in this devotion. This sincerity is the key that unlocks the doors of divine acceptance and mercy.

Finally, Allah addresses the doubters who deny the resurrection: "Just as He originated you, you will return." The same Almighty power that created you from nothing—from a drop of fluid, from dust—is fully capable of bringing you back to life after death. The One who began creation can surely repeat it. This is not a distant or impossible promise; it is a certainty that should awaken the conscience and remind every soul that they will stand before their Lord to be held accountable for their deeds.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse carries a beautiful and liberating message. It tells you that your Lord only commands what is just and good—He never commands evil or indecency. So whenever you see a teaching or a practice that contradicts justice, know that it does not come from Him. Embrace the pure path of Islam: worship your Creator with sincerity, establish your prayers wherever you are, and live your life with fairness and integrity. And never forget that your journey does not end with death—it continues into an eternal life where you will meet your Lord. Let this certainty fill your heart with hope and motivate you to do good, for every act of justice and sincerity you offer in this world is a seed you plant for your own harvest in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 27-31 — Al-A'raf

O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.
And when they commit an immorality, they say, "We found our fathers doing it, and Allah has ordered us to do it." Say, "Indeed, Allah does not order immorality. Do you say about Allah that which you do not know?"
Say, [O Muhammad], "My Lord has ordered justice and that you maintain yourselves [in worship of Him] at every place [or time] of prostration, and invoke Him, sincere to Him in religion." Just as He originated you, you will return [to life] -
A group [of you] He guided, and a group deserved [to be in] error. Indeed, they had taken the devils as allies instead of Allah while they thought that they were guided.
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
