Word Meanings:

  • "Deyyār" (دَيَّارًا): This refers to anyone who moves about, dwells, or lives on the earth—someone who walks, travels, or inhabits a place. It conveys the sense of a living, active person who comes and goes.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) had called his people to the worship of Allah alone for nine hundred and fifty years, enduring their mockery, rejection, and harm with patience and perseverance, and after Allah had revealed to him that no more of them would believe—only those who had already accepted the faith—Noah turned to his Lord in a final, decisive supplication. He said: *"My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers a single inhabitant."*

This was not a prayer born of hatred or personal vengeance, but rather a profound act of devotion and wisdom. Noah knew that these people were not merely rejecting him—they were rejecting Allah Himself, and their continued existence posed a grave spiritual danger. They were actively leading others astray, corrupting the hearts of the believers, and their offspring would only perpetuate disbelief and rebellion. If they were left alive, they would only increase in wickedness and drag others down with them into ruin. Therefore, Noah asked his Lord to cleanse the earth of them entirely, so that the seed of faith could be planted anew among those who truly believed.

This supplication also reflects Noah's deep understanding of Allah's justice and mercy. He did not ask for their destruction out of arrogance or despair, but because he recognized that their continued presence would only bring harm to the believers and prevent the establishment of righteousness on earth. It was a prayer aligned with divine wisdom, and Allah answered it by sending the great flood that drowned every disbeliever, while saving Noah and the believers aboard the ark.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse teaches us the profound lesson that true faith requires sincerity, patience, and complete trust in Allah's plan. Noah's story is a testament to the fact that no matter how long the struggle may be, Allah is always with His righteous servants. It also reminds us of the importance of protecting our faith and the faith of our loved ones from those who seek to corrupt it. Just as Noah prayed for the removal of evil, we too should pray for Allah's guidance, protection, and victory for the believers, and for the eradication of falsehood in all its forms. Let us take comfort in knowing that Allah hears every sincere supplication, and that His justice will always prevail in the end. May we, like Noah, remain steadfast in our call to truth, and may Allah grant us the strength to stand firm against all opposition.

And already they have misled many. And, [my Lord], do not increase the wrongdoers except in error."
Because of their sins they were drowned and put into the Fire, and they found not for themselves besides Allah [any] helpers.
And Noah said, "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant.
Indeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and not beget except [every] wicked one and [confirmed] disbeliever.
My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction."
