Word Meanings:

  • تَذَرْهُمْ (tadharhum): Leave them, spare them, or delay their destruction.
  • يُضِلُّوا (yudillu): They will lead astray, misguide, or turn away from the truth.
  • فَاجِرًا (fājiran): A wicked, sinful person who deviates from righteousness and obedience.
  • كَفَّارًا (kaffāran): One who is intensely and persistently ungrateful, denying Allah’s blessings and committing severe disbelief.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) — after nearly a thousand years of patient calling, enduring rejection, mockery, and harm from his people — turns to his Lord in heartfelt supplication, having lost all hope in their guidance. He says: "My Lord, if You leave them alive upon the earth, they will not only persist in their own disbelief, but they will actively misguide Your believing servants. They will pull them away from the path of truth, confuse their faith, and drag them into the same darkness they dwell in."

Nuh then reveals a painful reality: these people are so deeply entrenched in corruption that their very offspring will inherit their wickedness. They will not give birth to children who are righteous or grateful; rather, their descendants will be fājir — those who turn away from obedience and commit sins openly — and kaffār — those who are stubbornly ungrateful to Allah, denying His favors and refusing to acknowledge His oneness. This is not a mere prediction but a profound observation of their spiritual condition: a tree that bears rotten fruit will only produce more of the same.

This supplication was not born of hatred or vengeance, but of divine wisdom. Nuh understood that leaving such people would only multiply corruption on earth and increase the suffering of the believers. Their continued existence would be a source of trial and temptation for the faithful, and their progeny would carry the same poison of disbelief into future generations. Thus, he asked for their destruction as a mercy for the believers and a purification of the earth.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. It teaches us the importance of protecting our faith and the faith of our families and communities. Just as Nuh feared the corrupting influence of the disbelievers on the believers, we too must be vigilant about the environments we expose ourselves and our children to. A home filled with faith, gratitude, and obedience to Allah produces righteous offspring; a society steeped in sin and ingratitude breeds generations that drift further from their Creator.

Moreover, this verse reminds us of the power of sincere supplication. Nuh’s du'a was answered because it came from a heart that was utterly devoted to Allah and deeply concerned for the welfare of the believers. When we call upon Allah with genuine conviction, trusting in His wisdom and mercy, He responds in ways that are best for us — even if we do not immediately understand them.

Let us take heed: our children are a trust from Allah. We must strive to raise them upon faith, gratitude, and righteousness, and we must protect them from influences that would lead them astray. And let us always remember that Allah’s justice is perfect — He never destroys a people except when their corruption has become absolute and their reformation impossible. In His mercy, He gives chances; in His wisdom, He decides the end.

May Allah guide us to be among the grateful, the obedient, and the righteous — and may He protect our families from every path that leads away from His light.
