Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Rabbi" (رَبِّ): My Lord, the One who created, nurtures, and sustains all existence.
  • "Da'awtu" (دَعَوْتُ): I called, invited, and summoned them with earnestness and sincerity.
  • "Qawmi" (قَوْمِي): My people — his own community and kinfolk.
  • "Laylan wa naharan" (لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا): By night and by day — meaning continuously, without pause or interruption, in all circumstances and at all times.

Explanation of the Verse:

Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) — after enduring centuries of patient calling, after witnessing his people's stubborn rejection and mockery, and after exhausting every possible means of guidance — turns to his Lord with a heart both heavy and hopeful. He presents his case before Allah, saying: *"My Lord, indeed I have called my people to faith in You, to Your worship alone, and to obedience to Your commands — by night and by day."*

This statement is not a complaint, nor is it a boast. Rather, it is a sincere report from a devoted messenger who has fulfilled his duty with unwavering dedication. Nuh (peace be upon him) is informing his Lord that he left no stone unturned, no hour unutilized, and no opportunity unexplored. He called them in the darkness of night when hearts are soft and contemplative, and he called them in the brightness of day when people are active and engaged. His call was continuous, persistent, and unrelenting — spanning generations, as he remained among them for nine hundred and fifty years.

The beauty of this verse lies in its profound lesson for every believer and caller to Islam: the call to truth requires patience, constancy, and sincerity. Nuh (peace be upon him) did not give up after one attempt, nor after a hundred, nor after a thousand. He kept calling — day and night — because he understood that guidance comes from Allah alone, and his duty was simply to deliver the message with love and perseverance.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, look at the dedication of this mighty prophet! He did not tire of calling his people, even when they turned away, covered their ears, and persisted in disbelief. His heart was filled with mercy for them, and his sole desire was their salvation from the punishment of Allah.

This verse teaches us several profound lessons:

First: The importance of patience in da'wah (calling to Allah). Success is not measured by immediate results, but by sincere effort and steadfastness.

Second: The call to truth must encompass all times and all situations. A believer should not restrict his worship or his guidance of others to specific moments — rather, his entire life becomes a continuous call to goodness.

Third: When we feel that our efforts seem fruitless, we should turn to Allah exactly as Nuh did — with complete trust, presenting our situation to Him, and leaving the results in His hands.

Fourth: The verse inspires us to examine our own commitment. If a prophet of Allah called his people day and night for centuries, how much more should we — who have been blessed with the light of faith — strive to share that light with others, whether by word, by action, or by beautiful character?

O Allah, grant us the patience of Nuh, the sincerity of the prophets, and the love for Your creation that leads them to You. Ameen.

Remember, dear reader: every moment you spend calling others to goodness — whether by advising a friend, teaching a child, or simply living Islam beautifully — is recorded with Allah. Never underestimate the power of consistent, sincere effort. For just as Nuh's call eventually brought forth the believers who would be saved, your efforts too will bear fruit, in this life or the next, by the permission of Allah.

📜 Verse 3-7 — Nuh

[Saying], 'Worship Allah, fear Him and obey me.
Allah will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allah, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew.' "
He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day.
But my invitation increased them not except in flight.
And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance.
