- Ajalin musammā – "To an appointed term": A fixed time known only to Allah, which is the moment of your death.
- Ajalu Allah – "The term of Allah": The time decreed for your destruction or death.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this blessed verse, Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) continues his sincere call to his people, inviting them to faith and obedience. He tells them: If you respond to my call—believing in Allah alone, fearing His punishment, and obeying His commands—then Allah will forgive you your sins and wash away your misdeeds. Moreover, He will grant you a blessed extension in your lives, keeping you safe from the torment that would otherwise seize you, until the appointed time of your natural death. This is a profound mercy: that repentance and faith do not only secure the Hereafter, but also bring blessings and longevity in this world.
Then Nūḥ warns them with a profound truth: when Allah's decree arrives—whether it is the moment of death or the punishment for persistent disbelief—it cannot be delayed or pushed back even for an instant. If only they truly knew this reality, they would hasten to faith and repentance before the door of opportunity closes. The verse is a gentle yet firm reminder that time is precious, and every moment of delay in turning to Allah is a loss that cannot be recovered.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless message for every soul. It teaches us that the path to Allah is not one of hardship and deprivation, but of mercy, forgiveness, and abundant blessings. When you turn to your Lord in sincerity, He does not merely erase your sins—He opens doors of provision, peace, and longevity that you never imagined. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever loves that his provision be expanded and his life be extended, let him maintain ties of kinship" (agreed upon). And what greater tie than the bond with your Creator through faith and obedience?
Yet, the verse also awakens us from the slumber of procrastination. We often say, "I will repent later," or "I will pray when I am older," forgetting that the appointed term is unknown. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your preoccupation, and your life before your death" (al-Ḥākim).
So, let this verse be a gentle nudge to your heart: the door of repentance is open, the mercy of Allah is vast, and the reward is beyond measure. Do not wait for a tomorrow that may never come. Turn to Him now, with a sincere heart, and experience the peace that only faith can bring. For indeed, Allah's promise is true, and His mercy precedes His wrath.
