Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Du'ā'ī (دُعَائِي): My calling and invitation to the truth — specifically, the call to worship Allah alone and obey Him.
- Firāran (فِرَارًا): Fleeing, running away, or turning away in aversion and escape from the call.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) reports to his Lord the outcome of his persistent and sincere efforts. He says: "My calling did not increase them in anything except flight and escape." That is, instead of drawing them closer to faith, his invitation only made them run further away from the truth. Every time he called them to believe in Allah and obey Him — a call that was meant to bring them forgiveness and mercy — they responded with greater aversion, stubbornness, and distance from the message. Their hearts grew harder, and their rejection became more intense. This was not a failure of the call itself, but a reflection of their own arrogance and obstinacy. The Qur'anic context then goes on to describe how they plugged their ears with their fingers, covered themselves with their garments, and persisted in their disbelief with great pride — all in a desperate attempt to block out the truth.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer and caller to Islam. It teaches us that the success of guidance is not measured by the number of people who respond — rather, it is measured by the sincerity of the effort and the fulfillment of the duty. Prophet Nūḥ, one of the greatest messengers, spent centuries calling his people, yet only a few believed. This does not diminish the value of his call in the sight of Allah; on the contrary, his patience and perseverance are eternally honored. So, dear believer, do not be disheartened when your words of truth are met with rejection or even hostility. Your role is to convey with wisdom and beautiful preaching — the guidance itself is in the Hands of Allah alone. Take comfort in the example of the prophets, and know that your sincere دعوة (call) is never wasted. Every word you speak for Allah's sake is recorded, and your reward is secure with Him, whether people accept or flee. And if you see people running away from the truth, let it increase your compassion for them and your reliance on Allah — for the heart that turns away today may, by Allah's mercy, turn back tomorrow.
