Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- عَصَى (ʿaṣā): He disobeyed, rebelled, and refused to follow the command.
- الرَّسُول (ar-Rasūl): The Messenger — here referring to Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him.
- أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا (akhdhan wabīlan): A severe, heavy, and painful seizure — a punishment that was mighty and overwhelming in its force and consequence.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah draws a powerful and sobering parallel between the fate of Pharaoh and the fate of those who reject His messengers. Just as Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ as a witness over the people of Makkah, He had previously sent Musa (Moses) as a messenger to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh — despite witnessing clear signs, miracles, and the truth — chose arrogance over submission. He disobeyed Musa, rejected his call, and persisted in tyranny and transgression.
So how did Allah deal with him? He seized him with a punishment that was wabīl — heavy, crushing, and inescapable. In this life, Pharaoh was drowned in the sea, his body preserved as a sign for later generations. And in the Hereafter, he faces the torment of the Fire — a punishment that is far greater and everlasting. The word "wabīl" conveys the idea of something that weighs down upon its victim with unbearable force, leaving no room for escape or relief.
This verse is not merely a historical report — it is a living warning. Allah is saying to the Quraysh and to all who hear this message: if you disobey the final Messenger Muhammad ﷺ, as Pharaoh disobeyed Musa, then beware — the One who seized Pharaoh with such severity is fully capable of seizing you. No power, no wealth, no army can protect a person from Allah's justice when they persist in rejecting His guidance.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. Pharaoh had everything — power, armies, wealth, and a civilization that seemed invincible. Yet none of that availed him when the decree of Allah came. The One who humbled Pharaoh is the same Lord who watches over you and me. If you find yourself in a position of strength, do not let it lead you to arrogance against Allah's commands. If you have made mistakes, know that the door of repentance is open — unlike Pharaoh, who only believed when death had already overtaken him, and his faith was rejected.
The most beautiful aspect of this message is that Allah mentions this warning to us out of His mercy — so that we may learn from the past and not repeat the same errors. He does not wish to destroy us; He wishes to guide us. So respond to His call today, before the seizure comes. Submit to the Messenger ﷺ with love and obedience, and you will find safety in this life and the next. Let the story of Pharaoh be a light that shows you the path of humility and faith, and a shield that protects you from the consequences of pride and disobedience.
