Word Meanings:

  • Tattaqūn (تَتَّقُونَ): To protect oneself, to guard against harm, or to shield oneself from danger.
  • Shīban (شِيبًا): Plural of *ashyab*, meaning white-haired; refers to the whitening of hair due to extreme old age or intense terror.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse poses a profound and alarming rhetorical question to those who persist in disbelief: "How will you protect yourselves, if you disbelieve, from a Day that will turn the children grey-haired?"

The meaning is: If you continue in your rejection of Allah and His Messenger, how could you possibly shield yourselves from the terror of the Day of Resurrection? That Day is so severe, so overwhelming, and so prolonged that even young children—who are ordinarily far from old age—will have their hair turn white from the sheer horror and distress of it. This is a vivid image meant to shake the heart: the innocence of childhood itself will not spare one from the psychological and spiritual weight of that Day.

The verse serves as a direct warning: no human strategy, no wealth, no status, and no worldly power can protect a person from the consequences of disbelief. The only true protection lies in faith, repentance, and righteous deeds in this life. The imagery of children turning grey-haired is not literal in the sense of natural aging, but rather a metaphor for the extreme, unimaginable terror that will seize all creation on that Day.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is not meant to frighten you into despair, but to awaken you into hope and action. If the Day described here is so terrifying that it turns the young into the old, then how can we afford to be careless about our relationship with our Creator? The door of repentance is open right now—before that Day arrives. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us this life as a chance to turn back to Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to prepare for what lies ahead. Do not wait until the moment when no excuse will be accepted. Embrace faith, perform good deeds, and hold fast to the Qur'an, for it is a light that guides you safely through the darkness of this world and the terrors of the Hereafter. The One who warns you of that Day is the same One who offers you His mercy and His Paradise—so respond to Him while you still can.

📜 Verse 15-19 — Al-Muzzammil

Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness upon you just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger.
But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure.
Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white- haired?
The heaven will break apart therefrom; ever is His promise fulfilled.
Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way.
