Surah Al-Muzzammil — Verse 8

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ — and through him, every believer — to remember the Name of his Lord constantly. This remembrance is not merely a movement of the tongue, but a state of the heart that reflects in action. It means to call upon Allah by His Names, to praise Him, and to keep His remembrance alive in every moment of the day.

Then Allah commands: *"And devote yourself to Him with complete devotion."* This is a call to sincere, exclusive worship — to cut oneself off from all that distracts from Allah, and to turn to Him with full sincerity and submission. It is an invitation to make Allah the center of one's life, to detach the heart from worldly attachments that pull one away from Him, and to surrender all affairs to Him alone.

This verse beautifully follows the previous one, which reminds us that Allah is the Lord of the East and the West — there is no deity worthy of worship but Him. So after establishing His absolute sovereignty, the command comes naturally: since He alone is the Master of all, then remember Him, rely on Him, and devote yourself entirely to Him.

So make remembrance your companion, and let your heart be wholly devoted to the One who never abandons you.
