Word Meanings:

  • Kuloo (كُلُوا): Eat, consume, or partake of provisions.
  • Wa tamatta'oo (وَتَمَتَّعُوا): And enjoy yourselves, take pleasure, or relish in fleeting delights.
  • Qaleelan (قَلِيلًا): A little, briefly, or for a short while—emphasizing the temporary and limited nature of worldly life.
  • Innakum (إِنَّكُمْ): Indeed, you (addressing the disbelievers).
  • Mujrimoon (مُجْرِمُونَ): Criminals, sinners, or those who persist in wrongdoing—specifically referring to those who commit the gravest crime of associating partners with Allah and denying His messengers.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse stands as a stern and sobering address from Allah to those who reject faith and persist in disbelief. It is said to them—whether in this life or as a rebuke on the Day of Judgment—"Eat and enjoy yourselves for a little while." The phrase "a little while" is deeply significant: it reminds them that the entire span of worldly existence, no matter how long it may seem, is but a fleeting moment compared to the eternal Hereafter. Every pleasure they savor, every luxury they indulge in, every desire they fulfill—all of it is confined to this short, finite life.

Then comes the decisive clause: "Indeed, you are criminals." This is not merely a description but a verdict. Their crime is not a minor offense; it is the ultimate transgression—shirk (associating partners with Allah), kufr (disbelief), and the persistent rejection of Allah's messengers and His signs. They have chosen to live as if there is no accountability, no resurrection, and no reckoning. Yet their own actions testify against them, and their fleeting enjoyment cannot erase the weight of their guilt.

The verse carries a dual tone: it is both a warning and a call to reflection. On one hand, it exposes the folly of those who trade eternal bliss for momentary gratification. On the other hand, it invites every reader to pause and ask: Is this short life worth risking an everlasting punishment? The criminal, even while enjoying his meal, knows deep down that the consequences are coming. Likewise, the disbeliever may laugh and play today, but the reality of his crime will inevitably catch up with him.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a mercy wrapped in a warning. Allah does not wish to destroy you; He wishes to awaken you before it is too late. The "little while" of this world is your golden opportunity—not to sin freely, but to repent sincerely. Imagine a traveler who is told, "You have only a few hours left in this city; spend them wisely." Would he waste them on trivialities, or would he prepare for the long journey ahead? This life is exactly that: a brief stop before an eternal destination. The One who created you, who sustains you, who gives you every breath—He is telling you now: do not be among the criminals. Turn back to Him, embrace His mercy, and taste the true sweetness of faith that never fades. The door of repentance is open, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Allah extends His hand at night so that the sinner of the day may repent, and extends His hand by day so that the sinner of the night may repent." Do not let the "little while" deceive you. Choose the everlasting joy over the fleeting illusion.
