Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَجْرَمُوا (ajramū): Those who committed crimes and sins, specifically referring to the disbelievers who persisted in their disbelief and wrongdoing.
- يَضْحَكُونَ (yaḍḥakūn): They laugh, meaning they mocked and ridiculed in a scornful manner.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals a painful reality that has existed throughout history: the criminals—those who persisted in disbelief and transgression—used to laugh at the believers. Their laughter was not one of joy or friendliness, but of mockery and derision. When they saw the believers walking on the path of guidance, submitting to their Lord, and following His Messenger (peace be upon him), they found it amusing and treated them with contempt.
This was the attitude of the disbelievers in Makkah toward the early Muslims. They would sneer at them, exchange glances of ridicule when the believers passed by, and when they returned to their families, they would jest and joke about the believers' faith. They even went so far as to claim that the believers had gone astray for following the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), saying, "These people have truly lost their way!" Yet, these criminals were never appointed as guardians or watchers over the believers—they had no authority to judge them or their choices.
The verse carries a profound lesson for us today. When you face mockery for your faith, remember that this is not a new trial—it is the sunnah (way) of Allah with His righteous servants throughout history. The disbelievers of every era have always found it easy to laugh at those who submit to Allah, but their laughter is short-lived.
The beauty of this verse lies in what follows in the coming verses: the tables will turn completely on the Day of Judgment. On that day, it will be the believers who laugh at the disbelievers, as they see the criminals reaping the consequences of their arrogance and mockery. The One who is never unjust, never forgets, and never errs in His judgment will settle the account.
So, dear believer, do not be saddened by the laughter of those who mock your faith. Their laughter is temporary, but your reward is eternal. Stand firm upon the truth, for the final victory belongs to the believers, and the ultimate joy—the joy of seeing justice served—will be theirs in the Hereafter. Let this verse strengthen your heart and remind you that Allah sees every tear, every moment of patience, and every act of steadfastness—and He will not waste the reward of those who do good.
