Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يَتَغَامَزُونَ (yataghāmazūn): They wink at one another or exchange subtle signals using their eyes, eyebrows, or hands — a gesture of mockery and derision aimed at belittling others.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse paints a vivid picture of the arrogant criminals and their contemptuous behavior toward the believers in this worldly life. When these wicked individuals passed by the faithful, they would exchange sly glances and wink at one another, mocking and ridiculing them. Their gestures were filled with scorn, as if to say, "Look at these people and their foolish faith!" They used body language and silent signals to humiliate the believers, turning their very presence into a source of amusement and jest.

This behavior reveals the deep-seated arrogance and malice in their hearts. They could not simply let the believers be; instead, they felt compelled to belittle them at every opportunity, whether by word or by gesture. Their mockery was not born of truth or reason, but of pride and a refusal to accept the guidance that the believers had embraced.

Yet, the Quran reminds us — and this is a profound lesson for every believer — that such mockery is a reflection of the mocker's own weakness, not the believer's worth. The believers, who patiently endured this scorn for the sake of Allah, are promised a complete reversal of fortunes on the Day of Judgment. On that Day, it will be the believers who laugh at the disbelievers, just as the disbelievers laughed at them in this world. The tables will be turned, and justice will be served in the most perfect manner.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, let this verse be a source of comfort and strength for you. If you ever find yourself mocked, ridiculed, or looked down upon because of your faith, remember that this is not a new trial — it is the path of all prophets and righteous believers. The disbelievers of Makkah did the same to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions, yet Allah never abandoned them. He turned their patience into victory and their humiliation into honor.

So hold firm to your faith with pride and dignity. Do not let the sneers of others shake your conviction. For the One who sees every wink and every whisper is fully aware of your struggle, and He has prepared for you a reward that far surpasses any temporary discomfort. And on that great Day, when the truth is fully unveiled, you will see who truly was on the right path — and the laughter will be on your side, forever.
