Surah Al-Mutaffifin — Verse 5

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse completes the warning that began in the preceding verses, where Allah condemns those who cheat in weights and measures — those who demand full measure when others give to them, but give less when they measure or weigh for others. After describing their sinful behavior, Allah poses a profound question: Do such people not believe that they will be raised from their graves and brought to account for their deeds?

The answer lies in the phrase: "For a Great Day" — meaning, they are heading toward a Day of immense horror and awe. That Day is the Day of Judgment, when every soul will stand before its Lord, and no secret will remain hidden. On that Day, the scales of justice will be set, and even the smallest atom of good or evil will be weighed. The cheater who took a grain more than his due, or gave a grain less than owed, will face the full consequence of his actions.

This Day is called "Great" because of the overwhelming events it contains: the heavens will split, the stars will scatter, the mountains will crumble, and all of humanity — from the first to the last — will gather on one plain, barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised, waiting for the judgment of the Most Just of judges. There will be no intercessor except by Allah's permission, no refuge, and no escape.

Dear reader, pause and reflect: If you truly believed in this Great Day, would you dare to cheat your brother or sister in even a single gram? Would you take what is not rightfully yours, knowing that every scale and measure will be re-weighed with perfect precision on that Day?

The beauty of Islam is that it connects our daily transactions — even the smallest ones — to our relationship with Allah. Honesty in trade is not merely a worldly virtue; it is an act of worship that draws us closer to our Creator. And the one who is honest in this world will find, on that Great Day, that his honesty becomes a light for him, while the cheater will find his deeds confronting him in shame.

So let this verse awaken your heart: The Day is coming — a Day that is truly Great. Prepare for it by being just in all your dealings, for Allah is watching every scale, every measure, and every heart. And know that the reward of the honest is with the Most Generous, who never lets a single good deed go to waste.
