So I swear by the twilight glow
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Shafaq (الشَّفَق): The reddish glow that appears in the sky after sunset, lingering on the horizon until nightfall. It is a sign of the transition from day to night.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) swears by the twilight glow — that beautiful reddish hue that paints the horizon after the sun has set. This is a magnificent oath from the Creator, Who swears by His own magnificent creation to draw attention to a profound truth. The twilight is a moment of breathtaking beauty, a daily spectacle that marks the boundary between light and darkness, and it serves as a reminder of Allah’s perfect power and wisdom in orchestrating the universe.

When Allah swears by something, He elevates its significance and calls our attention to it, inviting us to reflect upon it. The twilight is not merely a natural phenomenon; it is a sign pointing to the greatness of the One Who created it. It reminds us that just as the sun sets and the sky transforms, so too will our lives transform — from this temporary world to the eternal Hereafter.

This oath introduces what follows in the coming verses: the certainty of the Resurrection and the stages that every human being will pass through. From a drop of fluid, to a clinging clot, to a lump of flesh, to the breathing of the soul, to birth, to life, to death, and finally to resurrection — each stage is a testament to Allah’s absolute power over all things.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, look at the sky as the sun sets and the twilight spreads its crimson glow. In that fleeting moment lies a profound lesson: nothing in this world is permanent. The day ends, the night falls, and so too will your life in this world come to an end. But that is not the end — it is merely a transition to a greater reality. Allah, Who created this magnificent universe and swears by its wonders, has promised that you will be raised again and held accountable for your deeds. Let this beautiful sign in the sky remind you to prepare for that inevitable meeting with your Lord. Embrace faith, do good, and seek His mercy — for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, and His promise is true.
