Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • As-Samaa' (السَّمَاءِ): The sky or heaven — the vast celestial expanse above us.
  • Dhati (ذَاتِ): Possessor of, or that which has.
  • Ar-Raj'i (الرَّجْعِ): Literally means "the return" or "that which returns." In this context, it refers to the rain, which is called "returning" because it comes down from the sky, returns again and again, and repeats its cycle continuously.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah — the Almighty — takes an oath by the sky that possesses the "return," meaning the rain that repeatedly falls from it. The rain is described as "returning" because it descends from the sky, nourishes the earth, then evaporates back up, and returns once more as rain — a continuous, life-giving cycle that Allah has perfected. This is a profound sign of Allah's power and mercy: the sky that brings down water again and again, without fail, to sustain all living beings on earth.

The oath here draws our attention to this magnificent natural phenomenon, inviting us to reflect on the precision and wisdom embedded in creation. The rain is not a one-time event but a recurring mercy — a gift that returns season after season, demonstrating Allah's constant care for His creation. When we contemplate how the sky "returns" the rain, we see the hand of the All-Wise, the All-Powerful, who has set this system in motion for our benefit.

This verse also serves as a prelude to the greater message that follows — that the Qur'an is a decisive word, distinguishing truth from falsehood. Just as the rain returns to revive a dead land, so too does the Qur'an return to revive dead hearts, bringing them to life with guidance and light. The regularity of rain is a reminder of Allah's faithfulness to His promises, and His promise of resurrection and accountability is just as certain.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look up at the sky and see how it pours down its blessings time after time — never stingy, never late. This is your Lord's mercy made visible. If He cares for the earth with such generosity, how much more does He care for you? The same sky that brings rain also carries His revelation, and the same Lord who sends down water sends down guidance. Open your heart to this Qur'an — the decisive word that returns to you again and again, calling you to truth, warning you of falsehood, and promising you a life of peace in this world and the next. Do not let this mercy pass you by; respond to your Creator who has never stopped providing for you, and He will never stop guiding you.
