Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Ard (الأَرْضِ): The earth, the ground upon which we walk and live.
  • Dhat al-Sad' (ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ): "Possessor of splitting" or "that which splits open." The word *sad'* refers to the act of cleaving, splitting, or cracking open—specifically, the earth splitting to allow vegetation, plants, and trees to emerge from beneath its surface.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Allah Almighty takes an oath by the earth that splits open—the very ground beneath our feet that cracks and cleaves to bring forth plants, fruits, and trees. This is not merely a physical phenomenon; it is a sign of Allah’s boundless power and mercy. The earth, seemingly solid and lifeless, bursts open to reveal life in all its forms—green shoots piercing through dry soil, roots spreading beneath the surface, and fruits emerging to nourish creation. This splitting is a daily miracle that we often overlook, yet it demonstrates Allah’s absolute control over life and death, growth and decay.

The oath by the earth that splits is paired with the oath by the sky that pours down rain, as mentioned in the preceding verse. Together, they point to the cycle of sustenance: the sky sends down water, and the earth splits open to receive it and bring forth provision. This is a direct reminder of Allah’s generosity and care for His creatures—He does not leave us without sustenance, but rather orchestrates the heavens and the earth to serve us.

Moreover, this imagery carries a deeper spiritual lesson. Just as the earth splits open to release what is hidden within, so too does the heart of a believer split open to release faith, gratitude, and submission to Allah. And just as the earth is revived after rain, so too can a soul be revived after the drought of sin through sincere repentance and turning back to Allah.

The verse also serves as a powerful reminder of the Hereafter. The same earth that splits to bring forth plants will one day split open to bring forth the dead from their graves for the Day of Judgment. Thus, the physical reality we witness daily is a preview of the greater reality to come—a resurrection that is certain and inevitable.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the earth beneath your feet. Every time you see a seed sprout, a tree blossom, or a field turn green, remember that this is Allah’s promise in action. He who splits the earth to bring forth life is the same Allah who has sent down the Qur’an—a decisive word that separates truth from falsehood. So let your heart split open with humility and gratitude, and let your actions be rooted in obedience to your Creator. The earth obeys Allah’s command; will you not also obey? The earth does not delay in bringing forth its fruits; will you not hasten to bring forth the fruits of faith—prayer, charity, kindness, and truthfulness? Indeed, in every crack of the earth lies a sign for those who reflect, and in every sign lies an invitation to draw closer to Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

Then man will have no power or any helper.
By the sky which returns [rain]
And [by] the earth which cracks open,
Indeed, the Qur'an is a decisive statement,
And it is not amusement.
