Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Fir‘awn (Pharaoh): The title given to the rulers of ancient Egypt, specifically here referring to the Pharaoh of Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him.
- Dhī al-Awtād (Possessor of the Stakes/Pegs): This phrase has two primary interpretations: (1) The pegs or stakes he used to tie people to when torturing them, and (2) his mighty armies and vast resources that were like "pegs" that stabilized and strengthened his rule over Egypt.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) continues to remind humanity of His justice and power by citing the fate of the tyrant Pharaoh. After mentioning the people of 'Ad and Thamud, Allah turns to Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, who was described as "the possessor of the stakes." This description highlights two aspects of his tyranny: first, his brutal practice of staking his victims to the ground or to wooden pegs to torture them mercilessly—a sign of his extreme cruelty and arrogance. Second, it refers to his immense military might and the multitudes of soldiers and supporters who were like firm pegs that held his kingdom together, giving him strength and stability. Despite all this power, his wealth, his armies, and his cruel methods could not protect him from the punishment of Allah. When the command of his Lord came, all his might crumbled, and he was destroyed along with his forces in the sea. This serves as a powerful reminder that no matter how strong, wealthy, or well-supported a person may be, they can never escape the justice of Allah, and all worldly power is utterly insignificant before His might.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder over the fate of Pharaoh—a man who had everything this world could offer: unmatched power, vast armies, and absolute control over his people. Yet, in a single moment, all of it was rendered worthless. His "stakes" of soldiers, wealth, and cruelty could not hold him up when Allah’s decree arrived. This is a profound lesson for every soul: do not be deceived by the temporary glories of this life, nor by the strength of your resources or the number of your supporters. True success lies in submitting to the One who created you, who holds the heavens and the earth in His grasp. The Qur’an invites you to open your heart to this truth—that Allah is the Most Just, the Most Powerful, and the Most Merciful. He does not wrong anyone, but He is swift in taking account of the tyrants. Let the story of Pharaoh be a beacon of guidance for you: turn to Allah in humility before it is too late, and know that His promise is true. He loves those who repent and seek His forgiveness, and He is ever ready to welcome His servants back with open arms. Do not let pride or worldly attachments become the "stakes" that bind you to destruction—rather, anchor your heart to the rope of Allah, and you will find peace, security, and eternal success.
