Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ash-Shaf‘ (الشَّفْعِ): The even number, or that which comes in pairs — meaning everything created in pairs, such as male and female, heaven and earth, day and night.
  • Al-Watr (الْوَتْرِ): The odd number, or the single one — referring to Allah Almighty, Who is One and Unique, and also to every single thing that stands alone.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah Almighty swears by the even and the odd — by everything that exists in pairs and by everything that is singular. This divine oath draws our attention to the profound order and wisdom embedded in all of creation. Look around you: everything in this universe is either paired or singular. The heavens and the earth, day and night, light and darkness, male and female — all are pairs that complement one another, reflecting a perfect system designed by the All-Wise Creator. And then there is the One Who has no pair, no equal, no partner — Allah, the Unique, the Eternal, the Watr — the Single One upon Whom all of creation depends.

This oath reminds us that nothing in existence is random or meaningless. The pairing of things points to harmony, balance, and purpose, while the singular points to the Oneness of Allah — the only true object of worship. When you reflect on the even and the odd, you are invited to see the hand of Allah in every detail of life. The pairs teach you about love, cooperation, and completion — as in the pairing of spouses who find tranquility in one another. The singular teaches you that Allah alone is sufficient, that He needs no partner, and that your heart should be devoted to Him alone.

So, dear reader, let this oath awaken your consciousness. When you see the pairs in your life — your family, your friends, your blessings — thank Allah for them. And when you feel alone, remember that Allah is the Watr, the One Who is always with you, closer to you than your own jugular vein. He is the Single One who never leaves you, and turning to Him in every moment of your life is the key to true peace and success. Let this verse inspire you to live with gratitude for the pairs and with unwavering faith in the One.
