Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yuḍilla (to lead astray): Here it means to decree or judge someone as misguided, or to punish them with misguidance.
- Hudāhum (guided them): Bestowed upon them the blessing of faith and right guidance.
- Mā yattaqūn (what they should avoid): The obligations and prohibitions they must be mindful of, particularly in matters of creed and practice.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, in His infinite mercy and justice, would never decree misguidance upon a people after He has blessed them with guidance and faith—until He has first made clear to them what they must avoid and what duties they must fulfill. This verse addresses a profound principle: Allah does not hold people accountable for what they do not know, nor does He judge them as astray before the proof has been established upon them.
The context of this verse relates to the believers who had asked forgiveness for their polytheist relatives before the prohibition of doing so was revealed. Allah clarifies that He does not punish or declare a people misguided until He has fully explained the divine commands and prohibitions. Once the truth is made clear, and a person still persists in error, then they rightfully deserve the label of misguidance.
This verse beautifully demonstrates Allah's perfect justice. He never leaves a soul without guidance before testing it. He sends messengers, reveals scriptures, and clarifies the path of righteousness so that no one can claim ignorance on the Day of Judgment. The divine method is always: first the clarification, then the accountability.
Allah concludes with the profound statement that He is All-Knowing of everything. He knows the state of His servants—who among them is sincere in seeking truth and who is obstinate in rejecting it. He knows what is in their hearts before and after His guidance comes to them.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a source of immense comfort and hope for every sincere seeker of truth. It tells us that Allah, in His mercy, does not abandon people to darkness without first sending them light. He has given us the Qur'an, the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ, and the clarity of His guidance so that we may walk the straight path with confidence.
If you are searching for truth, know that Allah has already prepared the way for you—He has sent His final revelation as a complete and clear guide. Embrace it with an open heart, and you will find that Allah's guidance illuminates every step of your journey. And if you have fallen into error after knowing the truth, know that the door of repentance is always open; Allah's knowledge of your state is coupled with His infinite mercy, and He loves those who turn back to Him. Let this verse inspire you to seek knowledge, act upon it, and invite others to the beauty of Islam with wisdom and compassion.
