Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Akhirah (الآخرة): The Hereafter; the eternal life that follows death, encompassing all that Allah has prepared for His righteous servants.
  • Al-Ula (الأولى): The first life; i.e., this worldly life (ad-dunya), which is temporary and fleeting.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a direct and comforting address from Allah to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), following a period of pause in revelation that had saddened him. Allah reassures him: "The Hereafter is indeed better for you than this worldly life."

The meaning is profound and layered. The life to come—with its eternal bliss, the highest ranks in Paradise, the pleasure of Allah, and the honor of intercession for his nation—is far superior to the transient joys, trials, and hardships of this world. Whatever goodness, victory, or comfort the Prophet experienced in this life, the rewards of the Hereafter surpass them infinitely in quality, permanence, and grandeur. This worldly life is short, filled with tests, and ends in death, while the Hereafter is everlasting, with delights that never fade and blessings that never cease.

Furthermore, the verse carries a promise: Allah will grant His Prophet such abundant favors in the Hereafter—including the Praiseworthy Station (Al-Maqam Al-Mahmud), the Pool of Kawthar, and the highest Paradise—that he will be fully pleased and satisfied. This is a divine pledge of honor and generosity.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a timeless principle: whatever we sacrifice for the sake of Allah in this world, Allah compensates with something far better in the Hereafter. The believer who faces hardship, poverty, or rejection in this life should take heart—this world is not the final destination. The Hereafter is where true success lies. So, do not grieve over what you miss in this temporary world, and do not envy those who have more of it. Instead, invest your efforts in what lasts forever: faith, good deeds, and the pleasure of your Lord. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most beloved to Allah, yet he endured trials—and Allah still promised him the better reward. How much more, then, should we, who are in greater need of Allah's mercy, hold firmly to this hope and strive for the eternal bliss that awaits the patient and the righteous? Let this verse fill your heart with tranquility and your soul with longing for what is with Allah—for that is truly the best.

Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muhammad], nor has He detested [you].
