Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Wadda‘aka (وَدَّعَكَ): To bid farewell, to leave or abandon someone, as one does when parting from a beloved.
- Qalā (قَلَى): To hate, to despise, or to hold someone in contempt.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with words of immense comfort and reassurance. The context is that the revelation had paused for a period, and the disbelievers of Makkah seized this opportunity to mock the Prophet, saying that his Lord had abandoned him and now hated him. Allah, the Most Merciful, responds directly to silence these claims and to soothe His beloved Messenger’s heart.
The verse declares: "Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor does He hate you." The word "wadda‘aka" refers to the act of parting and leaving someone behind, like a traveller who bids farewell to a companion and moves on. Allah negates this entirely—He has not left His Prophet, nor has He cut him off. The word "qalā" means intense hatred and contempt, and Allah also negates this completely.
This is a profound reassurance: the pause in revelation was not a sign of displeasure or abandonment, but rather a divine wisdom—a moment of spiritual rest, a test of patience, and a prelude to even greater blessings that would soon follow. Allah was not angry with His Prophet; on the contrary, He was preparing him for an outpouring of favours that would surpass anything before.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder the tenderness of this divine address. The Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of all that exists, speaks directly to His Prophet with words of love and affirmation. If the Prophet of Allah—the most beloved of creation to Him—could face such trials and whispers of doubt from his enemies, then know that your own moments of hardship, silence, or delay in prayers being answered are not signs of Allah’s abandonment. Allah’s love for His righteous servants never wavers. When you feel that your supplications go unanswered or that the path grows dark, remember this verse: your Lord has not forsaken you, nor does He hate you. He is simply preparing you for something greater, testing your patience to elevate your rank, and drawing you closer to Him through your perseverance. So hold firm to your trust in Allah, for His mercy is nearer to you than your own jugular vein, and His wisdom is beyond all that you can perceive. Let this verse be a balm for your soul and a light in your darkest hours.
