Surah Al-Qadr — Verse 4

Word Meanings:

• Tanazzalu (تَنَزَّلُ): The descending or coming down of angels from the heavens to the earth.
• Ar-Rūh (الرُّوح): The Angel Jibrīl (Gabriel), peace be upon him, who is specifically mentioned alongside the angels due to his high rank and honour.
• Fīhā (فِيهَا): In that night — the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr).
• Bi-idhni Rabbihim (بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم): By the permission and command of their Lord, meaning it is not by their own will but solely by Allah’s decree.
• Min kulli amr (مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍ): With every matter — meaning all affairs and decrees that Allah has ordained for that coming year.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this magnificent verse, Allah, the Exalted, tells us about the immense honour of the Night of Decree. On this blessed night, the angels descend in great numbers from the heavens to the earth, and with them descends the noble Angel Jibrīl (peace be upon him), who is singled out for mention because of his distinguished status among the angels. They come down by the command and permission of their Lord — not on their own accord — carrying with them every matter that Allah has decreed for the upcoming year. This includes all affairs of creation: provisions, lifespans, births, deaths, and every other event that will occur, whether good or difficult, until the next year. The angels descend to witness the worship of the believers, to convey blessings upon them, and to carry out the commands of their Lord regarding the destinies of all creation.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, contemplate the greatness of this night! The heavens open, the angels pour down like a divine flood of mercy, and the decree of an entire year is sealed. This is not a night to be taken lightly — it is a golden opportunity that comes but once a year. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told us that whoever prays on this night with sincere faith and seeking reward from Allah alone will have all their past sins forgiven. So seize this precious moment! Stand in prayer, make heartfelt supplication, recite the Qur’an, and ask your Lord for everything good in this life and the next. The angels are descending — will they find you in worship or in heedlessness? This night is a gift from your Merciful Creator, so do not let it pass you by without drawing closer to Him. Indeed, the one who truly understands the value of this night will never waste it, for it is better than a thousand months — a lifetime of worship compressed into a single, blessed night. May Allah make us among those who witness its blessings and are written among the righteous.
