Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- الظلم (Dhulm): In this context, it refers to the gravest form of injustice — shirk (associating partners with Allah) and persistent disobedience against Him.
- عذاب الخلد (Adhab al-Khuld): The eternal, unending punishment. It is a punishment that never ceases and from which there is no respite or escape.
- تجزون (Tujzawn): You are being recompensed or rewarded (in this case, punished) for your deeds.
- تكسبون (Taksibun): What you have earned and accumulated through your own free will and actions in the worldly life.
The Interpretation:
After the wrongdoers are cast into the Fire and they plead for a way out, they will be addressed with a stern, humiliating rebuke: "Taste the everlasting punishment!" This is the moment when all excuses vanish and the reality of their choices becomes undeniable. The phrase "the punishment of eternity" is not merely about duration; it is about the quality of that suffering — a torment that is perpetual, with no pause, no end, and no hope of relief.
Then comes the piercing question that silences every complaint: "Are you being recompensed except for what you used to earn?" This is the ultimate justice. They are not being punished for a whim of the Creator, nor for a predetermined fate they had no control over. They are being repaid for the very deeds their own hands sent forth — the shirk, the arrogance, the transgression against Allah's rights, and the harm they inflicted upon themselves and others. The punishment is a mirror reflecting their own actions.
This verse carries a profound and urgent lesson for us in this life. It strips away any illusion that we can escape the consequences of our choices. Every sin we commit, every act of disobedience we engage in, is a seed we plant for our own future. But the door of mercy is wide open *now*. The One who warns us of this severe punishment is the same One who says, "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins." (Az-Zumar 39:53). So let this warning be a wake-up call — a divine invitation to turn back to Allah in sincere repentance *before* that Day arrives, when the only response to our plea will be: "Taste!" Today, we have the chance to earn a different recompense — the eternal bliss of Paradise — by submitting to the will of our Merciful Creator. Let us not be among those who only realize the weight of their deeds when it is too late.
