Key Words and Their Meanings:
- جَمَعَ مَالًا (jama'a mālan): Amassed wealth, gathered it from various sources.
- وَعَدَّدَهُ (wa 'addadahu): Counted it repeatedly, kept tallying it, and made it the sole focus of his life — some scholars also interpret this as making wealth his provision and security for all future events and calamities.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes the person who is consumed by the love of wealth. His sole concern in life is to accumulate money — collecting it from every possible means, counting it over and over, and taking pride in its quantity. His heart is so attached to his riches that he finds no time for worship, no time for reflection, and no time for the remembrance of Allah. He treats his wealth as his ultimate security, believing it will protect him from all of life's hardships and guarantee his happiness. Yet, this very obsession blinds him to the reality that wealth is merely a temporary provision in this world — a test from Allah — and not an end in itself. The verse subtly warns that such a person has misplaced his priorities, for he invests all his energy in what will eventually perish while neglecting what will truly benefit him in the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: what is it that truly occupies your heart? Is it the accumulation of this world's fleeting treasures, or is it the pursuit of what pleases your Lord? Wealth is not condemned in itself — rather, it is the attachment to it that corrupts the soul. The one who amasses wealth and counts it as his ultimate goal has forgotten that he himself will one day be counted, weighed, and judged by the One who created him. Let this verse be a gentle reminder to rebalance your priorities: use your wealth as a means to draw closer to Allah, to aid those in need, and to secure your place in the eternal life — for that is the true investment that will never diminish. The Quran calls you to a life of purpose, where your heart finds peace not in counting coins, but in the remembrance of the Most Merciful.
