Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, addresses the nations that came before you, O believers, and rebukes them gently but firmly: Why was there not among those destroyed peoples a group of people of virtue and righteousness—people of sound mind and good character—who would stand firm in forbidding corruption and disbelief upon the earth? Such people would have been a means of guidance and reform for their communities, steering them away from destruction.
Yet, history shows that only a few—whom Allah saved by His mercy—fulfilled this noble duty. They were the followers of the prophets, the sincere believers who advised their people and called them to truth, even when the majority opposed them. Because of their steadfastness, Allah saved them from the punishment that struck their wicked nations.
As for the wrongdoers among those nations, they followed only what they were given of worldly luxuries and pleasures. They became engrossed in their desires, chasing after comfort and indulgence, and in doing so, they persisted in their crimes and disbelief. Their attachment to this fleeting world blinded them to the truth, and their arrogance led them to reject the messengers. Thus, they deserved the severe punishment that befell them.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation, including ours. It reminds us that the survival of a community lies not in its wealth, power, or numbers, but in the presence of righteous individuals who enjoin good and forbid evil. Each of us, in our own capacity, is called to be among those "people of virtue"—to speak the truth with wisdom and kindness, to stand against corruption, and to be a beacon of guidance for others.
The verse also warns us against being enslaved by worldly comforts. When a person becomes so absorbed in luxury and pleasure that they forget their purpose and abandon their moral compass, they risk falling into the same fate as those who came before. Let us reflect: Are we among those who strive to reform, or are we merely following our desires? The choice is ours, and the consequences are real.
Islam calls us to be proactive, not passive. We are not merely to avoid evil ourselves, but to actively discourage it in our families, communities, and societies—while doing so with patience, mercy, and wisdom. This is the path of the saved few, and it is the path that leads to Allah’s pleasure and eternal success. May Allah make us among those who uphold righteousness and forbid corruption, and may He grant us the strength to prioritize the eternal over the temporary.
