Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Qurā (الْقُرَى): The towns or cities, referring to their inhabitants.
  • Bi-Zulm (بِظُلْمٍ): In this context, it means injustice or wrongdoing on the part of Allah—an impossibility that is negated here.
  • Muṣliḥūn (مُصْلِحُونَ): Those who are righteous, do good deeds, and work to reform themselves and their communities.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse delivers a profound and comforting message: Your Lord, O Messenger, would never destroy a town or city while its people are righteous and actively working toward goodness. Allah, in His infinite justice and mercy, does not punish people without cause. He does not wrong anyone, nor does He destroy communities that are filled with believers who strive to reform their deeds, uphold justice, and avoid corruption and oppression.

The destruction of nations in history—like the people of ʿĀd, Thamūd, or Pharaoh—was never an act of tyranny from Allah. Rather, it was a direct consequence of their own persistent wrongdoing, disbelief, and corruption. When a people abandon righteousness, spread oppression, and persist in sin, they bring destruction upon themselves as a natural result of their actions, and as a divine decree of justice.

This verse also serves as a reassurance to the believers: as long as a community holds onto faith, performs good deeds, and works to better itself, Allah’s mercy protects it from ruin. It is a call to every individual and society to be among the "muṣliḥūn"—those who not only avoid evil but actively strive to improve themselves, their families, and their surroundings. The more goodness prevails in a land, the more it becomes deserving of Allah’s protection and blessings.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a beautiful reminder that Allah’s justice is perfect and His mercy is vast. It invites you to be a force of good in your community—through your character, your words, and your deeds. When you see corruption around you, do not despair; instead, be among those who reform. Every act of kindness, every step toward justice, and every effort to spread goodness is a brick in the wall of protection for your society. Allah does not let the efforts of the righteous go to waste, and He never abandons a people who cling to Him with sincerity. So strive to be a reformer, and trust that Allah’s promise is true: He will not destroy a people who are committed to righteousness.

📜 Verse 115-119 — Hud

And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.
So why were there not among the generations before you those of enduring discrimination forbidding corruption on earth - except a few of those We saved from among them? But those who wronged pursued what luxury they were given therein, and they were criminals.
And your Lord would not have destroyed the cities unjustly while their people were reformers.
And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community; but they will not cease to differ.
Except whom your Lord has given mercy, and for that He created them. But the word of your Lord is to be fulfilled that, "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together."
