Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-A'ma (الأَعْمَى): The blind person — one who cannot see.
  • Al-Asamm (الأَصَمّ): The deaf person — one who cannot hear.
  • Al-Baseer (الْبَصِير): The seeing person — one who has sight.
  • Al-Samee' (السَّمِيع): The hearing person — one who has hearing.
  • Mathal (مَثَل): A parable or similitude — a vivid illustration to convey a deeper truth.
  • Tadhakkaron (تَذَكَّرُونَ): To remember, reflect, and take heed.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Allah presents a striking parable that contrasts the two groups of humanity: the believers and the disbelievers. The disbelievers are likened to a blind and deaf person — they cannot see the clear signs of Allah's existence, His power, and His mercy spread throughout the universe, nor can they hear the call of truth brought by the prophets. Their blindness and deafness are spiritual: they see but do not perceive, they hear but do not accept or benefit from what they hear. They are deprived of the light of guidance and the joy of faith.

On the other hand, the believers are likened to a seeing and hearing person — one whose eyes are open to the signs of Allah in creation, in the Quran, and in the natural order of things, and whose ears are open to the divine message with acceptance and submission. They see the truth clearly and hear the call of their Lord and respond to it with their hearts and actions.

Then Allah poses a rhetorical question: "Can the two be equal in comparison?" The answer is self-evident — absolutely not! Just as a blind and deaf person cannot be equal to one who sees and hears, the one who lives in darkness and ignorance cannot be equal to the one who walks in the light of knowledge and guidance. The difference between them is immense, both in this world and in the Hereafter.

Allah concludes the verse with a gentle yet powerful call: "Will you not then take heed?" This is an invitation to every human being to reflect deeply on this comparison, to examine their own state, and to choose the path of insight and hearing over the path of blindness and deafness. It is a call to awaken the heart, to open the eyes of the soul, and to embrace the light of faith.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this parable is not merely a description — it is a mirror placed before you. Ask yourself: Are you among those who see the beauty of Islam and hear its call with an open heart? Or have you allowed the distractions of this world to blind you and deafen you to the truth? The Quran is the light, and the Prophet ﷺ is the caller. The choice is yours. Do not let this life pass you by while you remain in darkness. Open your eyes to the signs around you, open your ears to the message of truth, and let your heart respond to its Lord. The difference between the two paths is the difference between light and darkness, between life and death, between eternal success and eternal loss. Take heed today, before it is too late, and let this parable be the turning point that brings you closer to your Creator.

📜 Verse 22-26 — Hud

Assuredly, it is they in the Hereafter who will be the greatest losers.
Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds and humbled themselves to their Lord - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide eternally therein.
The example of the two parties is like the blind and deaf, and the seeing and hearing. Are they equal in comparison? Then, will you not remember?
And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner
That you not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day."
