Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Salatuka (your prayer): The regular worship and devotion to Allah that Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) practiced.
- Al-Haleem (the forbearing): One who is patient, gentle, and slow to anger.
- Al-Rashid (the rightly guided): One who is wise, sensible, and sound in judgment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The people of Shu'ayb—who were steeped in injustice and corruption—turned to him with mocking words, saying: "O Shu'ayb, does your prayer—this constant devotion you practice—really command you to tell us to abandon the idols that our forefathers worshipped? And does it command us to stop dealing with our wealth and property as we please, using whatever tricks and schemes we wish to increase it?"
Their words were dripping with sarcasm and ridicule. They knew full well that Shu'ayb was a man of wisdom and sound character—they themselves acknowledged this when they said: "Indeed, you are the forbearing, the rightly guided." But they said this not as a genuine compliment, but as a taunt, meaning: "You were a sensible and wise man before you started this 'mission' of yours—what has come over you now?"
This verse reveals a profound truth about the nature of those who reject guidance. When people are attached to their desires and the ways of their ancestors, they often mock the very virtues they once respected. They twist the truth and use sarcasm as a weapon against the messengers of Allah.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, notice how the enemies of truth often resort to mockery when they cannot counter the message with logic. But the believer stands firm, knowing that the prayer and devotion to Allah purify the soul, elevate the character, and guide one to justice in all affairs—including how we earn and spend our wealth. The prayer of Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) was not merely a ritual; it was a source of moral strength that compelled him to speak against oppression, cheating in trade, and the blind following of forefathers.
Let this verse inspire you to hold fast to your prayers, for they are not just movements and words—they are a divine connection that shapes your values, your dealings, and your entire way of life. And when people mock you for your commitment to righteousness, remember that the prophets before you faced the same, yet they remained patient and steadfast, and Allah granted them victory and His mercy.
