Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Baqiyyatullah (بَقِيَّةُ اللّهِ): The remainder or surplus that Allah has left for you — meaning the lawful profit that remains after giving people their full rights and dues.
- Tatfif (التطفيف): Cheating in weights and measures — giving less than what is due when selling, and taking more than what is due when buying.
- Hafiz (حَفِيظ): A guardian or watchful keeper who records and accounts for all deeds.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, what Allah has left for you of lawful gain — after you have fulfilled the rights of others with full fairness and justice — is far better for you than any increase you might obtain through cheating, fraud, or corruption in the land. This is the pure, blessed provision that carries the pleasure of your Lord, whereas the wealth gained through dishonesty carries no blessing, even if it appears greater in quantity.
This statement is addressed to those who truly believe — because only a sincere believer can appreciate the value of what Allah has sanctioned and prefer it over what He has forbidden. If you genuinely believe in Allah and in the Hereafter, then be content with this lawful remainder, for it is the key to both worldly peace and eternal success. The believer knows that the blessing in a small lawful amount outweighs the curse hidden in a great unlawful fortune.
Then the Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) clarifies his role: "I am not a guardian over you." He does not claim to be a keeper who records their deeds or forces them to obey — his mission is only to convey the message clearly and sincerely. The One who watches over all deeds, who knows the secrets of hearts and the hidden motives behind every transaction, is Allah alone. He is the Reckoner who will call everyone to account for what they have done.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the sweetness of lawful provision, no matter how small, is far greater than the bitterness of unlawful gain, no matter how large. Allah does not need our obedience, but we desperately need His mercy and blessing. When you choose what Allah has left for you — even if it means less profit in this world — you are investing in the eternal trade that never loses. So let your faith guide your transactions, and remember that the true Guardian is watching, and His reward is the greatest treasure.
