Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rijālan – Men, human beings (not angels).
- Nūḥī ilayhim – We reveal to them (divine revelation).
- Ahl al-Qurā – People of towns/cities (civilized dwellers, not desert nomads).
- Dār al-Ākhirah – The abode of the Hereafter (the eternal life).
- Yattaqū – Those who are mindful of Allah, who guard themselves against sin and obey His commands.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, know that We did not send before you any messengers except men from among the people themselves — human beings, not angels — to whom We conveyed Our revelation. They were chosen from the inhabitants of towns and cities, not from the desert wilderness, because urban dwellers were better able to receive, comprehend, and convey the message to their communities. These messengers were ordinary men who ate, drank, walked in the markets, and lived among their people — yet they carried a divine trust that no angel could bear in the same way.
Then Allah turns our attention to a profound lesson: Have these people — the deniers of your message — not traveled through the earth and witnessed with their own eyes what was the final outcome of those who came before them? The nations of ʿĀd, Thamūd, and the people of Lot — where are their mighty structures and flourishing civilizations now? They were destroyed because they rejected the truth and belied their messengers. Their ruins remain as silent witnesses, speaking louder than any words, inviting every traveler to reflect and take heed.
And then comes the eternal truth that every believer must hold dear: The abode of the Hereafter is far better for those who are mindful of Allah. Whatever this worldly life offers — its pleasures, its wealth, its fleeting joys — all of it is nothing compared to what Allah has prepared for His righteous servants in Paradise. The Hereafter is the true life, the everlasting bliss, the meeting with the Most Merciful. So do they not use their intellect? Do they not reflect and realize that the fleeting pleasures of this world cannot compare to the eternal rewards of the next? If they would only think with sound minds, they would surely choose the path of taqwā — the path that leads to everlasting success.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless message that speaks directly to your heart. Allah chose human messengers — not angels — so that you would know that guidance is attainable, that ordinary people like you can rise to extraordinary heights through faith and obedience. The messengers were from towns, from among the people, so that no one could say, "How can we follow beings unlike us?" No — they were husbands, fathers, traders, and shepherds, yet Allah honored them with revelation.
And look at the invitation embedded in this verse: travel, observe, reflect! The earth is filled with signs and lessons. Every ruined civilization, every ancient monument, every trace of past nations is a book waiting to be read. The wise person does not merely see with the eyes but reflects with the heart.
Finally, the verse plants a seed of hope and motivation: the Hereafter is better for those who are mindful of Allah. This is not a vague promise — it is a certainty from the One who never breaks His word. So let your intellect guide you, let your heart yearn for what is everlasting, and let your actions today be investments for your eternal tomorrow. The best trade is the one where you give a fleeting moment of this world and receive an eternity of bliss in the next. Will you not then use your reason?
