Tafsir (Explanation):
When the sons of Ya‘qūb (Jacob, peace be upon him) entered Egypt through separate gates, as their father had instructed them, this action did not protect them from what Allah had already decreed. It could not repel the divine will or change their fate in the least. Rather, it was merely a heartfelt desire within Ya‘qūb—a father’s deep compassion and protective concern for his children—that he wished to fulfill by advising them to enter separately, fearing the evil eye or harm that might befall them as a group. He knew full well that nothing could avert Allah’s decree, yet taking permissible precautions is not a contradiction of trust in Allah; it is part of the natural means that Allah Himself has placed in His creation.
Indeed, Ya‘qūb was a man of profound knowledge—knowledge that Allah had granted him through revelation and divine teaching. He understood the reality of divine decree, the wisdom behind taking lawful measures, and the deeper truths of faith that many people fail to grasp. He combined reliance on Allah with practical caution, and this is the balanced way of the believers: to act with wisdom while submitting completely to Allah’s will.
But most people do not know this. They either fall into negligence, abandoning all means, or they become overly attached to means, forgetting that Allah alone is the Disposer of all affairs. The believer, however, strikes the perfect balance—taking the necessary steps while placing complete trust in Allah, knowing that the outcome is always in His Hands.
Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson in *tawakkul* (reliance on Allah) and *al-akhdh bil-asbāb* (taking permissible means). As Muslims, we are called to act wisely and prudently in our daily lives—whether in health, wealth, or safety—while never losing sight of the fact that Allah’s decree prevails over all. This is not a contradiction; it is the very essence of faith. The Prophet ﷺ himself used to take practical measures, such as wearing armor in battle and seeking refuge in fortified positions, while his heart remained firmly attached to Allah.
Let this be a reminder for us: do your part, plan well, and take every lawful precaution—but let your heart rest in the certainty that whatever Allah wills, shall come to pass. And in this beautiful balance lies true peace, true wisdom, and true success in this life and the next. May Allah grant us the understanding that He granted His noble prophet Ya‘qūb, and may He make us among those who combine knowledge with action, and action with sincere reliance upon Him.
