Surah Yusuf — Verse 85

Meanings of Key Words:

• تَفْتَأُ (tafta'u): Derived from the verb *fata'a*, meaning "to cease" or "to stop." In this context, it is used with a negation implied, meaning "you will not cease" or "you will not stop."
• حَرَضًا (haradan): A state of extreme physical and mental exhaustion, where a person becomes frail, emaciated, and on the verge of death due to overwhelming grief or illness. It refers to a body wasted away by sorrow.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the sons of Prophet Ya‘qūb (Jacob, peace be upon him) address their father with a tone of concern mixed with frustration. They say: "By Allah, you will not cease to remember Yūsuf (Joseph) until you become *haradan*—worn out, feeble, and consumed by grief—or until you join the dead."

Their words reveal the depth of Ya‘qūb’s sorrow. He had lost his beloved son Yūsuf years ago, and his grief had not faded with time. Instead, it had intensified, consuming his health and strength. The brothers, seeing their father’s deteriorating condition, feared that his unrelenting mourning would lead to his death. They urged him, in their own way, to moderate his grief and preserve his health, though their words carried a hint of reproach, as they did not fully grasp the spiritual depth of their father’s love and patience.

This verse highlights the profound human reality of loss and the struggle to balance emotional expression with physical well-being. It also shows the compassion—albeit imperfect—of the sons toward their aging father, as they witnessed his decline and wished to save him from further harm.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This scene from the life of Ya‘qūb (peace be upon him) teaches us that even the greatest prophets experienced deep human emotions. His grief for Yūsuf was not a sign of weak faith, but rather a testament to the strength of his love and the purity of his heart. Yet, Islam guides us to channel our emotions within the bounds of patience and trust in Allah. Ya‘qūb himself later said, "I only complain of my suffering and grief to Allah" (12:86), showing us that true solace lies in turning to the Creator, not in despair.

For every believer facing trials, this verse is a reminder that grief is natural, but it should never lead us to self-destruction. Allah loves those who persevere with patience and who seek comfort in His remembrance. Let us learn from Ya‘qūb’s example: hold onto hope, trust in Allah’s plan, and remember that after every hardship comes ease. The Qur’an is a healing for the hearts, and through it, we find the strength to endure even the heaviest of losses.
