Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- مُخْلِفَ وَعْدِهِ – One who breaks or fails to fulfill His promise.
- عَزِيزٌ – Almighty, All-Powerful, Mighty in strength and dominion; nothing can overcome Him.
- ذُو انتِقَامٍ – Possessor of severe retribution; the One who takes just and decisive vengeance upon His enemies.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Do not think, O Prophet—and by extension, every believer who reflects upon this—that Allah will ever fail to fulfill the promise He made to His messengers. That promise includes the victory of His religion, the triumph of His righteous servants, and the destruction of those who reject and oppose His call. Allah does not break His word; His promise is certain and His decree is inevitable.
The address here is directed to the Prophet ﷺ, but it carries a universal lesson for the entire Muslim nation: Allah’s promise of support and ultimate success for His cause is absolute. No matter how long the road may seem, or how powerful the enemies of truth may appear, Allah’s promise stands firm.
Then the verse gives the reason for this certainty: "Indeed, Allah is Almighty, Possessor of Retribution." He is the All-Powerful—nothing in the heavens or the earth can escape His will or weaken His might. He grants honor to His allies and humiliates His adversaries. And He is the Possessor of retribution—He takes vengeance upon the wrongdoers and the disbelievers who harm His messengers and oppress His servants. His punishment is just, severe, and inescapable for those who persist in transgression.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a source of immense comfort and strength for every believer. When you see falsehood spreading, when you witness oppression against the righteous, and when the path of truth seems difficult—remember that Allah has already promised victory to His messengers and their followers. He is not like human rulers who may break their promises or fail to deliver. Allah is the Almighty who has full control over all affairs, and He is the One who will settle accounts with the oppressors in a way that befits His majesty.
So hold firm to your faith, trust in Allah’s promise, and never despair. The end is always for the righteous, and the retribution of Allah is always awaiting the tyrants—whether in this world or in the Hereafter. Let this certainty fill your heart with patience, courage, and unwavering hope in your Lord.
