Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nutfah (نُّطْفَةٍ): A small, weak drop of fluid — specifically referring to the male seminal fluid from which human life begins.
- Khasim (خَصِيمٌ): One who is intensely argumentative, quarrelsome, and contentious in debate.
- Mubin (مُّبِينٌ): Clear, evident, and manifest — meaning the person's argumentativeness is obvious and unmistakable.
Tafsir (Interpretation):
Allah, the Exalted, draws our attention to one of the most profound signs of His power and wisdom: the creation of the human being. He says that He created man from a mere drop of fluid — a substance so insignificant, weak, and humble that it is easily overlooked and despised. Yet from this tiny beginning, Allah fashioned a being of extraordinary complexity, with intellect, speech, and the ability to reason and debate.
And then — astonishingly — this very same creature, who was brought into existence from nothing but a small drop, turns into a fierce and persistent opponent, arguing and disputing with clear and forceful speech. The very faculties that Allah granted him — his tongue, his intellect, his reasoning — are used by him to challenge his own Creator. He argues against the resurrection, questioning how Allah could bring bones back to life after they have decayed into dust, forgetting that the One who created him from a drop of fluid in the first place is fully capable of recreating him after death.
This is the height of ingratitude and arrogance: that a being who was created from such a humble origin should stand in opposition to his Maker, disputing His power and denying His promises. The human being forgets his beginning — he was nothing, then Allah brought him into existence, and now he dares to argue with the One who gave him everything.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth. If you can acknowledge that you were once a tiny, weak drop — invisible to the naked eye — and that Allah transformed you into a human being with a mind, a heart, and a soul, then how can you deny His ability to bring you back to life after death? The same power that created you from nothing is more than sufficient to recreate you.
Let this verse be a reminder of your humble origins, so that you may approach your Lord with humility and gratitude, rather than pride and argumentation. For the One who created you from a drop of fluid deserves your worship, your obedience, and your love — not your dispute and denial. Indeed, the path to true success lies in submitting to your Creator, acknowledging His infinite power, and preparing for the Day when you will stand before Him and be held accountable for every word you spoke and every argument you made.
So, do not be like the one who argues with his Lord out of arrogance. Instead, be among those who recognize the greatness of Allah, who reflect on their own creation, and who respond to His call with faith and submission. For He is the One who gives life and causes death, and He is the One who will resurrect you anew — and that is a promise that will certainly be fulfilled.
