Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Li-yakfuru" (لِيَكْفُرُوا): "So that they may disbelieve" or "so that they may be ungrateful" — here it refers to the consequence of their ingratitude, not a divine command.
  • "Bimā ātaynāhum" (بِمَا آتَيْنَاهُمْ): "In what We have given them" — referring to the blessings and favors bestowed upon them, particularly the removal of hardship and distress.
  • "Fatamatta'ū" (فَتَمَتَّعُوا): "So enjoy yourselves" — an imperative that carries a tone of threatening and warning, not a genuine invitation to pleasure.
  • "Fasawfa ta'lamūn" (فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ): "Then you will soon come to know" — a stern promise of impending knowledge of consequences.

The Interpretation:

This verse unveils the bitter reality of those who, when touched by adversity, turn to Allah in sincere supplication — but once relief arrives and the clouds of hardship disperse, they forget the Hand that saved them. Instead of gratitude, they slip into ingratitude and even associate partners with Allah, rejecting the very blessings He bestowed upon them.

The phrase "so that they may disbelieve in what We have given them" reveals that their ultimate outcome — the fruit of their misguided hearts — is sheer denial of Allah's favors. Among those favors is the very relief they begged for moments earlier. They cried out in desperation, and when the answer came, they repaid it with disbelief and polytheism.

Then comes the divine address, heavy with meaning: "So enjoy yourselves." This is not a blessing but a warning wrapped in irony. It says: *Take your fleeting pleasures, drink from the cup of this worldly life, and revel in your temporary comfort — for your time is short, and the reckoning is near.* It is a threat that grants them rope, allowing them to sink deeper into their folly until the moment of truth arrives.

The verse concludes with a chilling promise: "Then you will soon come to know." Know what? The bitter consequences of your ingratitude, the weight of your denial, and the reality of the punishment that awaits — both in this world and the Hereafter. This is a divine ultimatum that leaves no room for doubt: every soul will taste the result of its deeds.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and look at your own life. How many times has Allah answered your call in moments of darkness — when you had no one but Him? How many times did He remove your distress, heal your sickness, or open a door that seemed forever closed? And how did you respond? Did you thank Him, or did you turn away as if it were your own doing?

This verse is a mirror for the soul. It teaches us that gratitude is not merely a word on the lips but a state of the heart that manifests in worship, obedience, and humility. The disbelievers of old were given respite, but that respite was a trap — a gradual descent toward ruin. Do not let your blessings become your downfall. Every breath you take is a trust from Allah, and every favor you enjoy is a test.

Let this be a turning point: when you receive a blessing, say *Alhamdulillah* with a heart that truly feels it. When hardship lifts, let your faith deepen, not weaken. For the One who gave you relief from one trial is more than capable of granting you success in all your affairs — if only you remain grateful.

And remember: the enjoyment of this world is but a drop in the ocean of eternity. Those who trade eternal bliss for fleeting pleasure will soon come to know — when knowledge will no longer benefit them. So be among the thankful, and you will be among the successful.

And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allah. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.
Then when He removes the adversity from you, at once a party of you associates others with their Lord
So they will deny what We have given them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.
And they assign to what they do not know a portion of that which We have provided them. By Allah, you will surely be questioned about what you used to invent.
And they attribute to Allah daughters - exalted is He - and for them is what they desire.
