Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Naseeban" (نَصِيبًا): A portion or share.
- "Taftaroon" (تَفْتَرُونَ): Fabrications and lies that you invent and attribute to Allah without any basis.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse exposes one of the most astonishing contradictions in the behavior of the polytheists. They would assign a designated share of the wealth and provisions that Allah—the true Provider and Sustainer—had granted them, to idols and false deities that possessed no knowledge, no power, and no ability to benefit or harm anyone. These were mere stones and lifeless objects, yet the polytheists would dedicate portions of their crops, livestock, and earnings to them as an act of devotion, seeking their supposed favor.
The verse begins with the word "And they make" — highlighting that this was a persistent, habitual practice among them. They gave a share of Allah's bounties to things that "they do not know" — meaning these idols had no awareness of their worship, no understanding of their offerings, and no capacity to reciprocate. What greater folly could there be than to take the gifts of the All-Knowing, All-Powerful Creator and offer them to deaf, blind, and senseless objects?
Then comes the solemn oath: "By Allah, you will surely be asked about what you used to fabricate." This is a direct and powerful address to those who engaged in such practices. On the Day of Judgment, they will be questioned about every lie they invented, every false claim they made about these idols being deities worthy of worship, and every portion they misappropriated from Allah's provisions to offer to their fabricated gods. The questioning will be thorough, and the accountability will be absolute.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It reminds us that Allah alone is the source of all provision, and to Him alone belongs all gratitude and worship. When we reflect on the blessings around us—our health, our wealth, our families, our sustenance—we realize that not a single one of them comes from any other source. The polytheists of old directed their offerings to false gods, and today, many people direct their hearts, their time, and their resources to pursuits and priorities that have no real value in the sight of Allah.
The promise of accountability is not a threat to frighten us, but a mercy to guide us. It tells us that every action we take, every word we speak, and every choice we make will be reviewed by the Most Just of judges. This should inspire us to live with awareness, to purify our intentions, and to ensure that our resources—our wealth, our time, and our talents—are spent in ways that please Allah alone. Let us be among those who recognize the true Provider, who thank Him sincerely, and who reserve their devotion exclusively for Him. For the One who asks us about our deeds is also the One who rewards generously, forgives abundantly, and welcomes His sincere servants into an everlasting bliss.
