Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Fa-idha qara'ta" – When you intend to recite or begin reading.
- "Fasta'idh billah" – Seek refuge and protection with Allah.
- "Min ash-shaytan" – From Satan, the source of all evil whispers.
- "Ar-rajeem" – The one who is pelted, cursed, and driven away from Allah's mercy.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believer, when you intend to recite the Qur'an—whether in prayer or at any other time—you are about to engage in a profound act of worship that connects your heart to the words of your Lord. Before you begin, Allah commands you to seek His protection from Satan, the outcast who has been expelled from divine mercy. This means you should say: "A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytanir-rajeem" (I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed).
The wisdom behind this command is profound: Satan's greatest mission is to distract you from the Qur'an and prevent you from understanding and benefiting from it. He may whisper doubts into your heart, make you feel heedless, or cause your mind to wander while you read. By seeking Allah's refuge, you acknowledge your dependence on Him and arm yourself against these whispers. This simple act of seeking protection is a declaration that you rely on Allah alone to safeguard your heart and mind as you immerse yourself in His revelation.
This verse also teaches us a beautiful lesson about the etiquette of approaching the Qur'an. Just as you would prepare yourself physically and mentally before meeting a great king, you must prepare your soul before conversing with the King of Kings through His words. Seeking refuge is the first step of this preparation—it purifies your intention and shields you from the enemy who wishes to steal the blessings of your recitation.
Da'wah Reflection:
How merciful is our Lord! He does not leave us defenseless against our enemy. Instead, He teaches us the very words of protection before we engage with His Book. This is a sign of His infinite love—He wants every moment of your recitation to be a source of light, peace, and transformation. When you utter "A'udhu billah," imagine that you are placing yourself under the divine shield of the Almighty, the One who has power over all things. No force of evil can penetrate that shield. So, dear Muslim, never neglect this beautiful sunnah of seeking refuge. It is not merely a ritual—it is your spiritual armor, your key to unlocking the treasures of the Qur'an. Let it be a reminder that every time you open the Book of Allah, you are entering a sacred space where Satan has no place, and where your heart can soar in the presence of its Creator.
