Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Dha al-Qurba (ذَا الْقُرْبَىٰ): The near relatives; those connected by blood ties.
  • Al-Miskin (الْمِسْكِينَ): The poor and needy person who is in a state of destitution.
  • Ibn al-Sabil (ابْنَ السَّبِيلِ): The wayfarer; a traveler who is stranded or cut off from his wealth and family.
  • Tubadhdhir (تُبَذِّرْ) / Tabdheeran (تَبْذِيرًا): To squander, waste, or spend extravagantly in a manner that is excessive or in disobedience to Allah.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

O believer, Allah commands you to uphold the rights of your close relatives with kindness, care, and the warmth of family bonds. Give them their due share of love, support, and assistance, for maintaining family ties is a beloved act that brings barakah (blessing) into your life and home. Likewise, extend your hand to the poor and needy—those who struggle to meet their basic needs—and to the traveler who is far from home and resources, stranded on his journey. These are rights upon your wealth, not mere favors, and fulfilling them purifies your soul and your provision.

At the same time, Allah warns you with a powerful prohibition: "And do not squander wastefully." Do not spend your wealth in ways that displease Allah, nor in extravagance and excess that brings no benefit to you or others. Wasting wealth is a destructive habit that weakens the individual and the community, and it is a trait of those who follow the whispers of Satan. The believer is balanced—generous without being wasteful, and careful without being miserly. When you give, give with wisdom and sincerity, seeking the pleasure of Allah, and you will find that your wealth becomes a source of peace, growth, and lasting reward. Remember, every good deed you do for others is a seed you plant for your own Hereafter, and Allah loves those who are charitable yet mindful of His limits.

📜 Verse 24-28 — Al-Isra

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."
Your Lord is most knowing of what is within yourselves. If you should be righteous [in intention] - then indeed He is ever, to the often returning [to Him], Forgiving.
And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.
Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.
And if you [must] turn away from the needy awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word.
