Word Meanings:

  • لَا تَقْفُ (lā taqfu): Do not pursue, follow, or chase after something. It implies chasing after rumors, assumptions, or speaking without certainty.
  • مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ (mā laysa laka bihi ʿilm): That which you have no knowledge of—whether in speech, action, or belief.
  • السَّمْعَ (al-samʿ): The faculty of hearing.
  • الْبَصَرَ (al-baṣar): The faculty of sight.
  • الْفُؤَادَ (al-fuʾād): The heart or intellect—the seat of understanding, intention, and conviction.
  • مَسْئُولًا (masʾūlan): Will be questioned, held accountable.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O human being! Do not chase after that which you do not know. Do not speak about what you have not heard, claim to have seen what you have not witnessed, or assert what you have no certain knowledge of. Do not follow mere assumptions, suspicions, or rumors—especially when it comes to matters of faith, people’s honor, or judgments about others. Instead, verify, seek certainty, and base your words and actions on solid ground.

Allah then reminds you of a profound reality: your hearing, your sight, and your heart are not free tools—they are blessings entrusted to you, and each one will be questioned on the Day of Judgment. You will be asked: What did you listen to? What did you look at? What did you dwell upon in your heart? If you used these faculties for good, you will be rewarded; if you used them for harm, you will be held to account. Some scholars also explain that these very faculties will bear witness against you, testifying to what you did with them.

This verse is a beautiful call to mindfulness. It teaches you that Islam is not a religion of blind following or careless speech—it is a religion of certainty, responsibility, and awareness. Every glance, every word, every thought carries weight. Imagine the honor Allah has given you: He equipped you with senses and intellect to seek the truth, not to spread falsehood. Let this verse be a shield for you: before you speak, verify; before you judge, investigate; before you act, reflect. And know that your limbs are not silent—they are witnesses that will speak for you or against you on the Day when nothing is hidden.

So, dear believer, guard your ears from listening to gossip and falsehood, guard your eyes from looking at what Allah has forbidden, and guard your heart from harboring doubts, envy, or ill intentions. Let your hearing be for the Qur’an and beneficial knowledge, your sight for the signs of Allah’s creation, and your heart for contemplation and sincere faith. In doing so, you turn your very faculties into acts of worship—and you secure for yourself a beautiful answer on the Day you stand before your Lord.

📜 Verse 34-38 — Al-Isra

And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even balance. That is the best [way] and best in result.
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.
All that - its evil is ever, in the sight of your Lord, detested.
