Key Words and Phrases:

  • Those towns (تِلْكَ الْقُرَىٰ): Refers to the previous civilizations and communities mentioned in the Qur'an—such as the people of ʿĀd, Thamūd, Lot, and Shuʿayb—whose destruction serves as a lesson.
  • We destroyed them (أَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ): Divine punishment that eradicated these nations for their persistent wrongdoing.
  • When they wronged (لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا): Their injustice, primarily manifesting as disbelief (kufr) and transgression against Allah's commands.
  • An appointed time (مَوْعِدًا): A fixed, predetermined term or deadline set by Allah for their destruction.

Interpretation of the Verse:

This verse serves as a profound reminder of Allah's justice and His absolute control over the fate of nations. Allah points to the towns and civilizations that existed before you—communities that were given ample time, resources, and warnings, yet persisted in their oppression and rejection of the truth. When their injustice reached its peak, and they refused to reform, Allah's decree of destruction overtook them. However, this punishment was not arbitrary or sudden; it came at a precisely appointed time known only to Allah. This timing reflects His perfect wisdom—giving every nation a fair chance to repent, while ensuring that justice is served at the most fitting moment.

The verse carries a dual message: a warning and a hope. It warns that no nation, regardless of its power or achievements, is beyond accountability. Yet it also reassures believers that Allah's justice is never hasty or unjust—every action has its due consequence, and every promise of punishment or reward is fulfilled at its exact time.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: Allah does not destroy a people until they have crossed the line of justice and persisted in wrongdoing. This verse is a call to self-accountability. Before you blame the world or others, examine your own heart and actions. Are you among those who uphold justice, or are you drifting toward oppression—whether against yourself through sin, or against others through your words and deeds?

The beauty of Islam lies in its balance: it teaches us that Allah is Most Merciful, delaying punishment to give us time to return to Him, but it also reminds us that His justice is inevitable. Today, you have the opportunity to turn back to Allah, to correct your course, and to be among those who are saved rather than destroyed. Do not wait for the appointed time to arrive—for when it does, no plea or regret will avail. Embrace the mercy of Allah now, and let this verse be a turning point in your life toward righteousness and sincerity.

📜 Verse 57-61 — Al-Kahf

And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord but turns away from them and forgets what his hands have put forth? Indeed, We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if you invite them to guidance - they will never be guided, then - ever.
And your Lord is the Forgiving, full of mercy. If He were to impose blame upon them for what they earned, He would have hastened for them the punishment. Rather, for them is an appointment from which they will never find an escape.
And those cities - We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time.
And [mention] when Moses said to his servant, "I will not cease [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two seas or continue for a long period."
But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its course into the sea, slipping away.
