- ثُمَّ (Thumma): Then, indicating a sequence of events after the previous journey to the West.
- أَتْبَعَ (Atba‘a): He followed or pursued, meaning he took a path or route.

Tafsir (Explanation):
After Dhul-Qarnayn had completed his expedition to the far West, where he dealt justly with the people he found there, he did not rest or become complacent. Instead, he turned his attention toward the East, following another divinely facilitated route. This verse tells us that he pursued a new path—one that led him toward the rising place of the sun. It was not a random or aimless journey, but a purposeful mission guided by Allah, who had granted him both power and the means to reach distant lands. The word "sababan" here signifies the practical means—roads, knowledge, and authority—that Allah placed at his disposal, enabling him to travel vast distances and fulfill his role as a just ruler and servant of Allah.
This brief verse carries a profound lesson for us: success in one endeavor should not lead to idleness. Dhul-Qarnayn, despite his great power and achievements, continued to strive and move forward, using every means Allah gave him for the benefit of others. He did not let pride or comfort stop him from answering the call of duty. As believers, we are reminded that life is a continuous journey of growth and service. Allah grants each of us abilities, resources, and opportunities—our "sabab"—and He loves to see us use them for good, whether in our families, communities, or beyond. Let this inspire you to look at your own capabilities as gifts from Allah, and to ask yourself: how can I follow a path of benefit today? Even small steps, taken with sincere intention, are beloved to Allah and bring us closer to Him. The story of Dhul-Qarnayn is not just history; it is a living example of how faith, action, and reliance on Allah can move mountains—and how every believer can be a source of justice and mercy in their own time and place.
