Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- مَطْلِعَ الشَّمْسِ (Matli' ash-Shams): The place where the sun rises — the easternmost point of the earth as reached by Dhul-Qarnayn.
- سِتْرًا (Sitr): A covering, shelter, or protection — something that shields from the sun's heat and rays.
Explanation of the Verse:
After his journey to the west, where he dealt justly with the people he found there, Dhul-Qarnayn continued his travels eastward. He pressed on until he reached the very place where the sun rises — the far eastern edge of the inhabited world. There, he found the sun rising upon a people who had no shelter whatsoever: no buildings to shade them, no trees to protect them from the burning rays. Their land was barren and open, unable to support any construction or vegetation. They were a simple people, and Allah had not provided them with any natural or man-made cover from the sun's intense heat. They would retreat into underground tunnels and caves during the time of sunrise, emerging only when the sun had climbed high in the sky.
This scene is a profound reminder of the diversity of Allah's creation and His absolute power over all things. Some people are blessed with shade and comfort, while others live exposed to the elements — yet all are under His care and decree. The verse also highlights the extent of Dhul-Qarnayn's travels and his role as a just ruler who witnessed the wonders of the earth. For us, this is an invitation to reflect on the countless blessings we often take for granted: a roof over our heads, the shade of a tree, the coolness of a breeze. How many of us pause to thank Allah for these simple mercies? And how many of us realize that the same sun that scorches some peoples is the very sun that ripens our fruits and warms our days? Indeed, in the alternation of night and day, and in the varying conditions of people across the earth, there are signs for those who reflect. Let this verse inspire you to gratitude, to humility, and to a deeper awareness of the One who arranged this world with perfect wisdom.
