Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Asbat (الأسباط): The descendants of Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon him—the twelve tribes of Israel from whom many prophets emerged. Each tribe is called a *sibt* (سبط), similar to how "tribes" are called among the Arabs and "nations" among others.
- Ma u'tiya (ما أوتي): What was given—meaning the scriptures and divine revelations granted to the prophets.
- Muslimun (مسلمون): Those who submit fully and obediently to Allah alone.
Explanation of the Verse:
O believers, when the People of the Book—Jews and Christians—challenge your faith or claim that they alone follow the true path, respond to them with this noble declaration: We believe in Allah—the One and Only God, worthy of all worship—and in the Quran that has been revealed to us, and in the scriptures that were revealed to Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his sons Isma'il (Ishmael) and Ishaq (Isaac), and to Ya'qub (Jacob) and his descendants, the twelve tribes from whom many prophets arose. We also believe in the Torah that was given to Musa (Moses) and the Gospel given to 'Isa (Jesus), and in all that the prophets received from their Lord—whether scriptures, wisdom, or miracles. We make no distinction between any of them, believing in some and rejecting others as the Jews and Christians have done. Rather, we accept all the prophets and their messages equally, and we are completely submitted and obedient to Allah alone.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson in unity and fairness: true faith requires believing in all of Allah's messengers without discrimination. The Jews rejected 'Isa and Muhammad, peace be upon them, and the Christians rejected Muhammad, peace be upon him—but the believer's heart embraces them all as brothers in one divine message. This is the beauty of Islam: it confirms and honors all previous revelations while completing them with the final message of the Quran. As Muslims, we are called to be a balanced, just community—neither exaggerating in our love for any prophet nor denying any of them. This declaration is not merely words; it is a commitment to live in submission to Allah, following the guidance He sent through His messengers, culminating in the universal message of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful invitation to dialogue and mutual understanding. It tells us that Islam is not a new religion that cancels what came before, but rather the confirmation and culmination of the eternal truth that all prophets preached: submission to the One God. When you meet a Jew or a Christian, you can say: "We believe in what was revealed to you, and we honor your prophets—so let us come together on common ground: to worship none but Allah and to follow His guidance." This is the path to harmony and the essence of Islam—a religion of mercy, balance, and profound respect for all of Allah's messengers. Embrace this noble stance, and let it be a light that guides others to the truth of Islam.
