Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "بِمِثْلِ مَا آمَنْتُمْ بِهِ" — "in the like of what you have believed in": meaning, with the same faith and truth that you (the believers) hold, i.e., belief in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, without distinction between any of the prophets.
- "تَوَلَّوْا" — "they turn away": meaning, they turn their backs and refuse to accept this faith.
- "شِقَاقٍ" — "opposition/dissension": meaning, deep disagreement, enmity, and being on the opposite side of the truth.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse addresses the People of the Book (the Jews and Christians) and all those who reject the truth. Allah, the Most High, says: If these people believe in the same truth that you, O believers, have believed in — the complete and unaltered faith brought by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which confirms the core message of all previous prophets — then they have indeed found the right path and attained guidance. Their faith would align them with the straight path that Allah has chosen for His servants.
However, if they turn away from this call and refuse to accept it, arrogantly rejecting the truth after it has become clear to them, then they are only in a state of deep opposition and enmity — not just against you, but against Allah Himself and His divine plan. Their turning away does not harm the truth; it only harms themselves.
Then comes the divine reassurance: "So Allah will suffice you against them" — O Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Do not grieve over their rejection, for Allah will protect you from their evil, grant you victory over them, and defend His religion. Indeed, this promise was fulfilled historically: the tribe of Banu Nadir was expelled, Banu Qurayzah faced their just end, and the People of the Book were brought under the rule of justice with the payment of jizyah (protection tax).
Allah is "As-Samee' (the All-Hearing)" — He hears all their words, whether they speak in secret or openly, and He is "Al-'Aleem (the All-Knowing)" — He knows their inner intentions, their plots, and their deeds. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and His justice is perfect.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a powerful lesson of hope and certainty for every believer. When you stand firmly upon the truth, you are never alone — Allah Himself is your protector and defender. The rejection of others should never shake your confidence, for their opposition is merely a sign that they are on the opposite side of guidance. And just as Allah fulfilled His promise to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the early Muslims, He will continue to support those who sincerely uphold His cause.
So hold fast to your faith with pride and conviction, and know that the ultimate victory belongs to the truth. Let this verse be a source of comfort and strength — for the One who hears every word and knows every intention is more than sufficient for you. Turn to Him, trust in Him, and never fear the opposition of those who turn away.
