- Wa La Tuzlamun (وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ): And you are not wronged by receiving less than your principal.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse delivers one of the most powerful and awe-inspiring warnings in the entire Quran. After Allah commanded the believers to abandon all remaining forms of usury (riba) and interest, He now addresses those who might hesitate or refuse.
"If you do not do what you have been commanded — meaning, if you do not give up the interest that people owe you and persist in demanding it — then 'fa'dhanu bi-harbin min Allahi wa rasulihi': be certain and fully aware that you are declaring war against Allah and His Messenger."
Imagine the weight of this statement! The One who created the heavens and the earth, the One who holds your life and your provision in His Hands, is telling you that your persistence in taking interest is an act of hostility against Him. No believer with sound faith could hear this and remain unmoved. This is not a threat from a worldly ruler — this is the Lord of the Worlds Himself. And His Messenger ﷺ, the most merciful and compassionate of all creation, is also part of this declaration. This shows the extreme severity of riba in the sight of Allah.
Then, immediately, Allah opens the door of mercy and repentance — because His mercy precedes His wrath: "Wa in tubtum" — "But if you repent" — if you turn back to your Lord, abandon this forbidden practice, and sincerely seek His forgiveness — "falakum ru'usu amwalikum" — "then you shall have the principal amounts of your wealth." You are entitled to take back exactly what you originally lent, no more and no less.
And then comes the beautiful balance of justice: "La tazlimun wa la tuzlamun" — "You shall not wrong others, and you shall not be wronged." This single phrase encapsulates the perfect justice of Islam. You do not wrong the borrower by demanding interest on top of your principal, and you are not wronged by being denied your rightful principal. Islam stands firmly in the middle — protecting both the lender and the borrower, establishing fairness for all parties.
This verse teaches us that Islam is not merely a religion of rituals; it is a complete way of life that regulates even our financial transactions. It builds a society founded on justice, mercy, and mutual respect. When Allah forbids something, it is always for our own good — because He knows what harms us and what benefits us, even when we do not.
The companions of the Prophet ﷺ understood this warning so deeply that when this verse was revealed, the people who dealt in riba said: "We have no strength to fight against Allah and His Messenger." They immediately submitted and accepted only their principal amounts, fearing the consequences of opposing their Lord.
Dear reader, this verse is a call to every Muslim — past, present, and future — to purify their wealth from anything forbidden. It reminds us that our wealth is a trust from Allah, and we must earn and spend it in ways that please Him. When we obey Allah in our financial dealings, He blesses our wealth and our lives in ways we cannot imagine. But when we persist in what He has forbidden, we not only risk His punishment in the Hereafter, but we also lose the barakah (blessing) in our worldly affairs.
So let this verse be a turning point for you. Examine your financial dealings, purify them from any form of interest, and embrace the beautiful, balanced path that Allah has laid out for you. For indeed, in obeying Allah lies true success — in this life and the next.
