Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ (Attaqullāh): Fear Allah, be conscious of Him, and fulfill His commands while avoiding His prohibitions.
- وَذَرُوا (Wa dharū): Leave, abandon, or give up.
- مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الرِّبَا (Mā baqiya min al-ribā): What remains of usury/interest — i.e., the outstanding amounts of interest that were owed to you before the prohibition was revealed.
- إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ (In kuntum mu'minīn): If you are [truly] believers — meaning, if your faith is complete and genuine.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have believed in Allah and followed His Messenger! Fear Allah with true consciousness of Him — by obeying His commands and abstaining from what He has forbidden. And abandon whatever remains of usury (ribā) that people owe you — that is, release the interest amounts that were accumulated before the prohibition was revealed, and be content with taking back only your original capital.
This verse is a direct and powerful call to the believers, demanding that they prove the sincerity of their faith through action. If you truly believe in Allah and in what He has revealed, then your faith must manifest in obedience — and one of the clearest tests of that faith is your willingness to forgo the unlawful gains of interest, even those that were already owed to you.
The verse beautifully links faith with action: it is not enough to claim belief with the tongue; true faith is what moves the heart to submit and the limbs to obey. When Allah says "if you are believers," He is reminding us that faith is not a mere label — it is a living reality that transforms how we deal with money, with people, and with our own desires.
This is a moment of profound spiritual training for the early Muslim community, and for all believers until the end of time. Allah is teaching us that the believer's relationship with wealth is governed by divine law, not by greed or worldly custom. The one who truly fears Allah will not hesitate to give up even what is rightfully owed to him if it is tainted with what Allah has forbidden.
Dear believer, reflect on this noble call: Allah is not asking you to lose your capital — He is asking you to purify your earnings and your heart. By abandoning ribā, you gain far more than money: you gain the pleasure of your Lord, the purity of your wealth, and the peace of a conscience at rest. What could be more valuable than that?
Let this verse be a reminder that every command of Allah is a mercy in disguise. When He forbids something, He is protecting you from harm — both in this world and in the Hereafter. So respond to His call with a heart full of love and submission, and you will find that true success lies not in accumulating wealth, but in obeying the One who gave you everything you own.
